2-Pyridylphosphanes, I1 1) Ligands for Extreme Short Metal-Metal Contacts in Gold Complexes2-C,H4N -P(CH,), (la) and (2-C5H4N),PCH, (2a) and the corresponding phosphonium salts, phosphonium methylides, and phosphane-boranes are prepared. These 2-pyridylphosphanes (la, 2a) and their phenyl homologues (4a, 5a) as well as (2-CSH4N),P (3a) form stable 1 : 1 complexes l e -5e with AuCl in the reaction with (C0)AuCl. CO is liberated in the process and the gold atoms retain coordination number 2 with phosphorus as the exclusive coordination site of the ligand. -Substitution of the chloride ion in l e and 4e by BF; or PF; anions results in a headto-tail dimerisation of the cations due to the poor donor capacity of the complex fluorides. A saltlike structure with metallacyclic dications is thus formed (If, 4f, g). X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 f shows an almost planar, centrosymmetrical eight-membered ring system, coplanar with the two attached pyridine rings. The two gold atoms are part of almost linear P -Au -N axes and are as close to each other as 277.6(1) pm. This distance is at the lowest limit hitherto found for formally nonbonded gold atoms.
The first rings to contain the structural unit PCP have been obtained by reaction of Ph2PCH2PPH2 with Br(CH2)nBr (n = 2, 3, 4). The chemical properties and the bond lengths and angles in carbodiphosphorane with n = 2 are best described by the following formulation:
Triphenylphosphonium Cyclopropylide: X-Ray Diffraction Analysis of a Pyramidal Carbanion Crystalline, salt-free samples of the title compound 1, previously not isolated in a pure state, were prepared from (3-bromopropyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide and potassium hydride in tetrahydrofuran at -20°C. The NMR data of this material differ strongly from those reported in the literature and are indicative of a pyramidal carbanion geometry in solution. Spectra at ambient temperature show a rapid carbanion inversion, however. An X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the unusual pyramidal geometry of the cyclopropylide carbanion in the crystalline solid. The phosphonium center with its approximately tetrahedral array of substituents is attached to the nearly regular triangle of the cyclopropylide ring in such a way, that an angle of 58" is formed between the ylidic " P = C" bond and the triangular plane. Yet, the ylidic "P = C " bond length of 169.6 (6) pm suggests significant multiple bond character.
Molecular and Crystal Structures of Two Carbodiphosphoranes with P -C -P Bond Angles Near 120'sym-Dimethyltetraphenylcarbodiphosphorane (1) and the cyclic carbodiphosphorane 2 show in the crystalline state thesmallest P = C = P bond angles(l21.8 (3) and 116.7 (7)", respectively) observed so far among compounds of this type. The lengths of the ylidic P = C bonds (164.8 (4) pm in 1, 164.5 (12) and 165.3 (14) pm in 2) are within thedouble bond range. In 1 two phenyl rings are parallel with a mutual distance of 328 pm; in the crystal phenyl ring layers are formed. This favourable packing of the phenyl groups should be the reason for the small P -C -P bond angle, whose easy bending is thus demonstrated again. Phenyl-und Pyridinringe sind aus dem Beugungsdiagramm nicht unterscheidbar (R = 0.075, R, = 0.071). 2-Pyridylphosphanes, 111 ') Synthesis and an X-ray Diffraction Analysis of Copper(1) and Silver(1) Chloride ConiplexesThe phenyl-/(2-pyridyl)-phosphanes (2-C5H4N),P(C6H5)3-,, n = 1 -3, ( l a -c) form colourless 1 : 1 complexes 2a -c or 3a -c with CuCl or AgCI, respectively. The completely insoluble tripyridylphosphane complexes are probably coordination polymers, but the monopyridylphosphane adducts are oligomers. Their 31 P NMR spectra indicate equivalent phosphane groups. -The structure of the chloro[diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphane]silver(l) has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In this tetrameric complex (3a) the silver and chlorine atoms were shown to form a distorted cube, as it has also been found in the analogous triphenylphosphane complex. The (2-C,H4N)P(C6Hs), ligand is attached to the silver atom only through the phosphorus atom, and the nitrogen donor centers are nor engaged in bonding. Phenyl and pyridyl rings cannot be distinguished in the diffraction analysis ( R = 0.075, R, = 0.071).2-Pyridylphosphanen2) wird derzeit erneut verstarktes Interesse entgegengebracht3.4), da sie als Ligandsysteme zur Erzeugung enger Metall-Metall-Kontakte geeignet erscheinen.
