Desmundo (1996). Ana Miranda. Colonização. THE "ORPHANS OF THE QUEEN" IN DESMUNDO (1996): FROM THE HISTORICAL DISCOURSE TO THE FICTIONAL DISCOURSE AbstractWe aim to present who the "Orphans of the Queen" were and how they are depicted in the hybrid narrative Desmundo (1996), by Ana Miranda, a contemporary historical novel of mediation, just like to highlight the change of the perceptions that happens to the protagonist, Oribela de Mendo Curvo, when she comes across other cultures during the colonization period. The literary piece we are studying addresses the historical theme of the insertion of the Portuguese orphans in the Brazilian colony, during the sixteenth century, women whose duty was to marry colonists, white Portuguese men, and bear their children, a historical fact reread by Ana Miranda's novel (1996). As a result of this study, we concluded that the images of the orphans, depicted fictitiously, differ from the ones presented by the historiography and that the diegesis of the novel rereads critically this colonial past.
