Piezoelectric actuators transform electrical energy into mechanical energy, and because of their compactness, quick response time and accurate displacement, they are sought after in many applications. Polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramics are technologically more appealing than single crystals due to their simpler and less expensive processing, but have yet to display electrostrain values that exceed 1%. Here we report a material design strategy wherein the efficient switching of ferroelectric-ferroelastic domains by an electric field is exploited to achieve a high electrostrain value of 1.3% in a pseudo-ternary ferroelectric alloy system, BiFeO-PbTiO-LaFeO. Detailed structural investigations reveal that this electrostrain is associated with a combination of several factors: a large spontaneous lattice strain of the piezoelectric phase, domain miniaturization, a low-symmetry ferroelectric phase and a very large reverse switching of the non-180° domains. This insight for the design of a new class of polycrystalline piezoceramics with high electrostrains may be useful to develop alternatives to costly single-crystal actuators.

There is a general perception that a large piezoelectric response in ferroelectric solid solutions requires a morphotropic/polymorphic phase boundary (MPB/PPB), i.e., a composition driven inter-ferroelectric instability. This correlation has received theoretical support from models which emphasize field driven polarization rotation and/or inter-ferroelectric transformations.Here, we show that the ferroelectric system (1-x)PbTiO3-(x)Bi(Zr1/2Ni1/2)O3 (PT-BNZ), which shows d33 (~ 400 pC/N) comparable to the conventional MPB/PPB systems, does not belong to this category. In the unpoled state the compositions of PT-BNZ showing large d33 exhibits a coexistence of tetragonal and cubic-like (CL) phases on the global length scale. A careful examination of the domain strucures and global structures (both in the unpoled and poled states) revealed that the CL phase has no symptom of average rhombohedral distortion even on the local scale. The CL phase is rather a manifestation of tetragonal regions of short coherence length. Poling increases the coherence length irreversibly which manifests as poling induced CL P4mm transformation on the global scale. PT-BNZ is therefore qualitatively different from the conventional MPB piezoelectrics. In the absence of the composition and temperature driven inter-ferroelectric instability in this system, polarization rotation and inter-ferroelectric transformation are no longer plausible mechanisms to explain the large electromechanical response. The large piezoelectricity is rather associated with the increased structural-polar heterogeneity due to domain miniaturization without the system undergoing a symmetry change. Our study proves that attainment of large piezoelectricity does not necessarily require inter-ferroelectric instability (and hence morphotropic/polymorphic phase boundary) as a criterion.

In this paper, we have reported the effect of rare earth Nd 3+ ion substitution on crystal structure, ferroelectric, electrical and magnetic behavior of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition of polycrystalline ceramics 0.7Bi (1−x) Nd x FeO 3-0.3PbTiO 3 (BNFPT), where x = 0, 0.05, 0.10. Rietveld refinement of XRD profiles confirms coexistence of rhombohedralR3c and tetragonal P4mmpolymorphs forming MPB for all the compositions. We observed that the remnant polarization P r increases with increasing Nd 3+ concentration. Piezoelectric studies show gradual increase in piezoelectric coefficient (d 33) from 11 to 34 pC/N with increase in Nd 3+ concentration for BNFPT samples. All compositions exhibit weak ferromagnetic character. For the same composition range, the study of dielectric behavior revealed gradual decrease in Curie temperature (T c) as we increased doping content of Nd 3+ .
