M.S. V. yüzyılda bağımsızlaşan Doğu Kilisesi önce Pers coğrafyası ardından ise Asya coğrafyasının tamamında etkinlik ve faaliyet göstermeye başladı. Onların misyonları sonucunda M.S. VI. yüzyılda Hıristiyanlık daha spesifik bir ifade ile Nesturîlik ve kolları, Asya’nın Zerdüştçülük, Budizm gibi yerel dinleri, temel inanç sistemleri arasına girdi. Doğu Kilisesi’nin Asya’daki faaliyetinin başladığı dönem, Soğd coğrafyasının siyasi bakımdan oldukça istikrarsız, buna karşın ekonomik faaliyet açısından hareketli ve Soğdların Asya ticaret güzergahları boyunca kolonileşmeye başladığı zamana tekabül etti. Tek bir siyasi otoritenin hâkim olmadığı Soğd topraklarında tek bir dinin de ideolojik ve inanç bakımından hakimiyeti söz konusu değildi. Dinî hayat konusunda Soğd toplumsal yapısının esnek karakterini kullanan Doğu Kilisesi, Pers ve Baktriya coğrafyasında teşkilatlandıktan sonra etkisini Soğdya’ya ve Soğdya’nın başkenti Semerkant’a kadar genişletti ve M.S. VI-VII. yüzyıllarda Soğd kültür çevresine dahil oldu. Bu çalışmada Doğu Hıristiyanlığının Soğdya’da teşekkülü, Soğd toplum dokusuna uyumu ve Hıristiyanlığın Asya çapında yayılmasında Soğdların rolü, esas olarak mimarî ve Soğdlar tarafından üretilen Hıristiyan dinî metinleri çerçevesinde irdelenecektir. Bu çalışmanın hedeflerinden bir diğeri ise Soğd Hıristiyanlığının temel karakteristiklerini ortaya çıkarmaktır.
Soğdya ve Soğdlar hakkında tarih literatüründe İpek Yolu boyunca kurdukları ticaret kolonileri ve geniş ve başarılı ticaret ağları üzerine çalışmalar yoğunluktadır. Ancak Soğdlar, Antik dönemden erken Orta çağ dönemine kadar sadece ticaret bahsinde değil dini, sosyal hayat bakımından da etkin gruplardır. Soğdlar bu alanlarda ve kadının statüsü üzerine önemli oranda doküman ve arkeolojik veri üretti. MÖ. VI. yüzyılda Ahameniş İmparatorluğu’na tabi olan Soğdya’da bu dönemden itibaren İran dünyasının dini, siyasi ve hukuki yapısı kuvvetle tesirli olmaya başladı. Soğd kadınının hukuki statüsü ve sosyal hakları da bu dönemden itibaren şekillendi. Bu çalışmada doğrudan Soğdlar tarafından üretilen belgelerin analizi ile Soğd kadınının sosyal statüsünün tespiti ve bu belgelerin sağladığı zengin verilerden yola çıkarak Soğd toplumunda kadın kimliği ve üstlendikleri sosyal fonksiyonların tanımlanması hedeflendi.

Soğdlar ve Soğd medeniyeti XX. yüzyılın başlarından evvel Avrupalılar tarafından ancak Antik dönem yazarlarının kısa ifadelerinden tanınırdı. Onların tarihsel önemlerinin ortaya çıkışı, Türkistan coğrafyasında ve ticaret yollarında oynadıkları ana rolün tespiti ve Soğd dilinin Asya ticaret yolları boyunca lingua franca haline dönüşüm süreci 1903’te Turfan’da keşfedilmeye başlayan Soğdların ürettiği metinlerin, elyazmalarının keşfi ve çözülmesi süreci sonrasında anlaşıldı ve literatürde yerini aldı. Söz konusu süreç uzun döneme yayılmakla birlikte Soğd yazılı eserlerinin keşfi ve 1932’de Soğd dilinin, alfabesinin çözülmesi Soğd tarih araştırmalarının başlangıç noktasını oluşturdu. Bu çalışmanın inceleme nesnesi doğrudan Soğd medeniyet ürünlerinin keşfi sürecidir. Bu çalışmada özellikle Macar-İngiliz kâşif Sir Aurel Stein ve Alman Arkeolog Grünwedel öncülüğündeki çalışmaların Soğdca’nın ve Soğd medeniyetinin ürünlerinin aydınlatılmasındaki rolü yanı sıra XX. yüzyılın ilk yarısında yoğunlaşan Türkistan’a yönelik Batı arkeolojisi ardındaki kolonyalist hedefler ve emperyal rekabet irdelenmiştir. Bahsi geçen ilim adamlarının notları ve ürettikleri çalışmalar bu bağlamda tetkik edildi.
