Maurice landgrave de Hesse (1572–1632), dit Maurice le Savant en raison de son érudition, fit publier en 1631 un volumineux dictionnaire français-allemand, destiné en premier lieu aux élèves du collège qu’il avait fondé. L’organisation du texte est quelque peu déroutante dans la mesure où l’auteur regroupe les entrées selon leur appartenance à telle ou telle classe de mots et qu’à l’intérieur des sections destinées aux différentes parties du discours, les entrées ne sont pas traitées dans l’ordre alphabétique habituel. Après avoir analysé la description métalexicographique pratiquée dans ce dictionnaire, nous nous penchons sur la question de savoir de quelles sources l’auteur a pu s’inspirer: du Dictionaire François-Allemand de Levinus Hulsius (avant 1540–1606), sans doute, et peut-être du Thresor de la langve françoise de Jean Nicot (cl 520–1604).
Wie die ältere Studie von Gerhard Ising 1 gelten auch die meisten neueren Arbeiten zu Matthias Kramer (1640-1729) in erster Linie dem lexikographischen Oeuvre. Laurent Bray hat mit seiner grundlegenden Untersuchung nicht nur dessen Bedeutung für die Wörterbuchtradition des Französischen herausgearbeitet 2 , sondern auch den Zugang zu den zahlreichen Grammatiken und sonstigen Lehrwerken erschlossen, die Kramer während seiner jahrzehntelangen Lehrtätigkeit für das Italienische, Französische, Spanische und Niederländische -und nicht zuletzt für Deutsch als Fremdsprache -veröffentlichte.In der Forschung wird insbesondere Kramers innovativer Ansatz in der Lexikographie hervorgehoben, während sein Beitrag zur Grammatikographie als eher wenig originell eingeschätzt wird. Helmut Glücks Feststellung, dass Kramer als Grammatiker bislang nur "unzureichend zur Kenntnis genommen" wurde 3 , gilt auch für die 1 Gerhard Ising, Die Erfassung der deutschen Sprache des ausgehenden 17.
