En este artículo recopilamos algunos antecedentes de estudios sobre la muerte y el morir que utilizan la etnografía como método central de análisis para luego mostrar cómo, en la actualidad, la relación entre muerte y etnografía se encuentra cada vez más influenciada por el problema de la ética en la investigación. Partimos de una revisión sobre los estudios de fines del siglo XIX. Luego, analizamos estos desarrollos en los primeros manuales disciplinarios y en las etnografías sistemáticas que abordaron la problemática como medio para analizar otras esferas de la vida cotidiana. También mostramos los intereses centrales de los primeros estudios abocados por entero a este eje, así como los trabajos que dieron nombre a esta corriente de investigación. Las investigaciones desde aproximadamente la década de 1980 realzan la pesquisa como un evento que se co-contruye con los interlocutores y se plantea los peligros del extractivismo metodológico, aunque persiste aún cierto imaginario sobre la inocuidad de la etnografía. Desde nuestra perspectiva los estudios etnográficos sobre la muerte no pueden ni deben eludir preguntarse sobre las cuestiones éticas que envuelven la investigación.
