Este artículo examina las posibilidades y las limitaciones de las élites de color en Santiago de Guatemala entre finales del siglo XVII y principios del siglo XVIII. Para ello, estudia en detalle el caso del capitán y maestro dorador mulato Juan de Fuentes (1662-1722). El objetivo es dar cuenta de las prácticas y las estrategias de las élites de color para construir su notabilidad urbana. Este artículo muestra cómo las cofradías, las milicias y los gremios formaban un sistema y constituían las diferentes etapas de una notabilidad codificada, de la cual los libres de color no estaban necesariamente excluidos.
Dès la fin du xvi e siècle, les villes coloniales espagnoles étaient structurées par deux rapports hiérarchiques : le premier opposait les hommes libres aux esclaves et le second distinguait les Blancs des gens de couleur. Malgré cette centralité de la couleur, la séparation entre des milices de Blancs et des milices de couleur ne fut jamais automatique ou évidente. Cet article vise à restituer la genèse des compagnies de couleur de l’Amérique espagnole afin de mettre en rapport deux dynamiques qui émergent au tournant des xvi e et xvii e siècles : la formation d’élites de couleur et le rôle croissant des lexiques de la couleur dans les manières de dire les hiérarchies sociales.
