Ihnen möchte ich wissen, ob man an einem Orte, wie Göttingen ist, vergnügt leben könne, und wie man es angebe, es zu seyn. Denn ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, wie dieser und ein jeder Ort, wo Academien in Deutschland sind, Leipzig ausgenommen, und die Ernsthaftigkeit, die ein Professor annehmen muss, hierzu Gelegenheit gebe. Mich deucht, man müsse in dieser Lebensart alt werden, und vor der Zeit, man mag wollen, oder nicht. Es würde aber noch schwerer werden für jemand, der einen gütigen Himmel, und ein schönes Land, wo die ganze Natur lacht, lange Zeit genossen hat. 1 Als Johann Joachim Winckelmann am 30. März 1765 diese Zeilen aus Rom an Christian Gottlob Heyne richtete, schien die süffisante Frage auf den ersten Blick die reale Lebenssituation der beiden Korrespondenten zu widerspiegeln: Winckelmann lebte seit knapp zehn Jahren in Rom, seit fast zwei Jahren in der Stellung des päpstlichen Antiquars, 2 seinen Schilderungen in eben diesem und anderen Briefen zufolge in geradezu paradiesischen Verhältnissen; seine Ämter in der päpstlichen Administration kosteten ihn nicht mehr als zehn Stunden Arbeit pro Jahr (!), und er verkehrte auf gleicher Ebene mit einflussreichen Kardinälen, in deren prachtvollen Villen und Antikensammlungen er sich jederzeit als Freund aufhalten konnte. 3 Welche ungeheure Arbeitslast dagegen der Göttinger Professor zu tragen hatte, wird auch aus den anderen Beiträgen in diesem Band hinreichend deutlich, aber diese bestand nicht nur aus Forschung, Lehre, Akademie, Bibliothek, Herausgeberschaften, Aufbau und Organisation neuer wissenschaftlicher Institutionen, 1 die grundlegende Darstellung zu Winckelmanns Briefen aus Rom ist Disselkamp 1993; s. dort bes. 202-254 zu Winckelmanns Selbststilisierung als "Weiser auf dem Lande", der in der Ruhe und Zufriedenheit des römischen otium seinen Neigungen nachgehen kann, und die Analyse der Briefgruppe, die Disselkamp als Winckelmanns "große Selbstdarstellungen" bezeichnet (301-394); sie zeichnen ein idealisiertes Bild von Rom und den dortigen höfischen Verhältnissen als Gegenbeispiel zu der schwierigen kulturellen und sozialen Situation der Gelehrten in Deutschland.Doch so froh und frei, wie es die meisten seiner brieflichen Äußerungen glauben machen wollen, war auch Winckelmann in Rom wohl nicht immer; er hatte durchaus auch Verpflichtungen, wozu nicht zuletzt die des Fremdenführers für vornehme Gäste aus dem Ausland gehörten; liest man Winckelmanns Klagen über die völlige Gleichgültigkeit, mit der die deutschen und englischen Adelssprösslinge, denen er als päpstlicher Cicerone auf ihrem obligatorischen "Grand Tour" Rom zeigen musste 5 -und die er einmal in Verzweiflung als "Fürsten-Geschmeiß" tituliert -, seine enthusiastischen Präsentationen der Meisterwerke antiker Skulptur aufnahmen, kann man ernsthaft bezweifeln, ob der gütige Himmel und das schöne Land diese Frustrationen immer auszugleichen vermochten. 6 2 Der "freie" Winckelmann und der "verstaubte" Heyne?Dennoch prägten Winckelmanns enthusiastische Schilderungen seines Lebens in Rom für la...
