Lacy, η αντίληψη των Ελλήνων στην ελληνιστική περίοδο εξετάζεται μέσα από τις πληροφορίες των γραπτών πηγών αλλά λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν λιγοστά αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα. Μερικοί ιστορικοί προσπαθούν να διερευνήσουν τις αντιλήψεις των Ελλήνων για τους ξένους μέσα από τις ιδέες του εθνοκεντρισμού και της φυλετικής διάκρισης, όπως στο Greeks and Barbarians: Essays on the Interactions between Greeks and non-Greeks in Antiquity and the Consequences for Eurocentrism (1997) του J. E. Coleman et al. και στο The Origins of Racism in the West (2009) συλλογικό έργο με την επιμέλεια των M. Eliav-Feldon και B. Isaac. Στις αρχαιολογικές μελέτες, παρατηρούνται δύο ερευνητικές τάσεις για τους ξένους. Στη μία, που εκπροσωπείται από πλούσια βιβλιογραφία, οι μελετητές επικεντρώνονται σε συγκεκριμένα έθνη, φυλές ή ομάδες βαρβάρων. Για παράδειγμα, για την ιστορία και την τέχνη των Σκυθών μία παλιά αλλά βασική μονογραφία είναι το Scythians and Greeks. A Survey of Ancient History and Archaeology on the North Coast of the Euxine from the Danube to the Caucasus (1913) της E. H. Minns, στην οποία λαμβάνονται υπόψιν και αρχαιολογικά σκυθικά ευρήματα αλλά και τα ιστορικά δεδομένα. Για την ιστορία των νομάδων Σκυθών, τα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα και τα καλλιτεχνήματά τους συμπληρώνουν την έλλειψη πληροφοριών που μας παρέχουν οι ελληνικές γραπτές πήγες. Στις δυο μονογραφίες, Scythian Art (1987) του B. B. Piotrovsky και The Art of the Scythians. The Interpenetration of Cultures at the Edge of the Hellenic World (1995) του E. Jacobson εξετάζονται αναλυτικά τα τορευτικά έργα των Σκυθών. Ένας τόμος με τα πρακτικά του συνεδρίου αφιερωμένου στην Ellis H.
