Endovascular treatment of PAA with heparin-bonded stent grafts is a safe treatment option with good early and mid-term patency rates comparable with open repair using the great saphenous vein.
The use of a heparin-bonded Viabahn for SFA occlusive disease is related to patency rates within limits of surgical reconstruction. The procedure is related to low morbidity and amputation rates.
Endovascular repair has established a definitive role in the treatment protocol for PAAs. It is associated with acceptable long-term patency rates. Stent fractures occurred in almost one-third of cases but never led to limb loss. Future developments should focus on the design of more dedicated and durable stents for this specific indication.
