Three-year outcome of the heparin-bonded Viabahn for superficial femoral artery occlusive disease

Abstract: The use of a heparin-bonded Viabahn for SFA occlusive disease is related to patency rates within limits of surgical reconstruction. The procedure is related to low morbidity and amputation rates.

“…The early stent graft occlusion amounts between 1% and 11% in the literature. 10,11 This is similar to our result. In our study one major amputation was done within the first 30 days.…”

“…Our patients underwent general anesthesia in 20.9% due to additional operative procedures. Golchehr et al 10 treated 34% of their patients under general anesthesia and reported also no perioperative deaths. This result is similar to Kruse et al 13 who also used general anesthesia in 38.9%.…”

“…In a recent retrospective study on 73 legs treated with a heparin-bonded covered stent in 70 patients, the P1 segment was still diseased and thus overstented in about onethird of cases. 18 Previously, however, we have shown that failure of these covered stents, even when extended into the PA, is not related to a clinical catastrophe. 7 In a series of 49 patients presenting with a failed covered stent, the majority had a similar or even improved Rutherford category compared to before placement.…”

“…16e21 Heparin-bonding technology has increased patency rates of surgical grafts in general, and results with heparin-bonded stent grafts for occlusive disease are promising. 22 Early results in a small series of 10 patients showed good results up to 1 year. 23 The purpose of the present study was to evaluate patency of PAA treated with heparin-bonded stent grafts in a larger cohort of patients.…”
