Aim
To assess the effect of Training NANDA‐I Nursing Diagnoses, Nursing Interventions Classification and Nursing Outcomes Classification (The NNN system), on the nursing care related to the patient safety, in psychiatric wards.
Method
In a randomized controlled trial, 80 nurses were selected randomly and assigned into two, Control and Experimental, groups. Nurses documented reports, reviewed and analysed in terms of using the NNN system. The intervention of the study was the training of the NNN system, based on recognition of the signs, symptoms and aetiology of the important phenomena in the psychiatric wards.
Results
The Control Group used the NNN system (

= 34), both before and after the intervention, while the experimental group usage increased from (

= 26)–(

= 434). Therefore, the NNN system training, can improve the nursing care related to the patient safety in psychiatric wards.
What is known on the subject?• Irritability is a transdiagnostic psychiatric symptom among different mental health diagnoses, such as depression, anxiety, personality and substance abuse disorders.• The findings have implications for symptom science, one focus of nursing research that evaluates symptom experiences and their impact on quality of life and functioning.Irritability is consistent with this framework as it has disabling effects on educational, financial and social functioning, as well as vulnerability to psychiatric disorders and healthrelated quality of life.
Background: The need for faculty to educate prospective nurses is urgent: without sufficient nursing faculty, schools regularly reject qualified applicants, despite an increasing need for nurses. At the same time, many graduate-prepared nurses lack preparation in teaching and pedagogical frameworks. Problem: Literature on how PhD programs in nursing prepare graduates for teaching indicates that there is typically more emphasis on research than pedagogical learning. Approach: With the shift to remote learning under the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of California Irvine created a Graduate Fellows program to provide support to faculty while offering graduate students education in pedagogy and remote learning. Outcomes: Fellows were satisfied and reported increased understanding of challenges in teaching and increasing comfort with nurse faculty roles. Conclusions: The collaborative efforts of fellows and faculty provided important resources at a critical time, and insights gained can inform similar projects in nursing faculty development.
