Magnesiumeinkristalle wurden im dynamischen Zugversuch im Temperaturbereich von 77° K bis 453 °K verformt. Ähnlich wie bei Zink und Kadmium wird auch bei Magnesium eine Drei‐Bereiche‐Verfestigungskurve beobachtet. Die kritische Schubspannung nimmt bei tiefen Temperaturen mit wachsender Temperatur linear ab. Oberhalb von etwa 300 °K scheint sich ein weniger temperaturabhängiger Ast des τ0—T‐Diagramms abzuzeichnen. Der Temperaturverlauf der Verfestigungskoeffizienten in den Bereichen A und B der Verfestigungskurve ist qualitativ gleich. Die Tieftemperaturwerte sind unterhalb von 200 °K temperaturunabhängig und fallen oberhalb davon mit wachsender Temperatur ab. Die erstmals im Tieftemperaturbereich gemessenen θB‐Werte von Magnesiumeinkristallen ergeben G/θB = 400. Die Länge des Bereiches A ist bei tieferen Temperaturen temperaturunabhängig und wächst oberhalb von 370 °K mit steigender Temperatur. Die Länge des Bereiches B verhält sich ähnlich. Die Temperaturabhängigkeiten der reduzierten kritischen Schubspannungen τA/G, τB/G und τC/G lassen sich in der Form ln {τ(T)/G(T)} = A1,2 — B1,2T wiedergeben, die jeweils aus zwei Ästen [1, 2] besteht. Aus dem Tieftemperaturast der τC/G‐T/F(T))‐Abhängigkeit wurde die Stapelfehlerenergie von Mg für T = 230 °K zu 40 erg/cm2 abgeschätzt.
Die Temperaturabhängigkeiten der Hauptkenngrößen der Verfestigungskurven von Mg‐, Cd‐ und Zn‐Einkristallen in bezug auf die absolute Schmelztemperatur TS dieser Metalle werden einander gegenübergestellt.
