Es wird ein uberblick iiber den derzeitigen Stand der Kenntnis auf dem Gebiet des glasartigen Kohlenstoffes gegeben. Glasartiger Kohlenstoff, eine parakristalline Substanz geringer Dichte (= 1,5 g/cm3)), kann aus bestimmten organischen Polymeren durch Festkorper-Pyrolyse hergestellt werden. Die Kriterien fur die Auswahl geeigneter Ausgangssubstanzen werden genannt und die Eigenschaftsiinderungen dieser Substanzen wiihrend des Pyrolyse-Vorganges diskutiert . Das Endprodukt der Umwandlung, glasartiger Kohlenstoff, zeichnet sich durch eine Reihe bemerkenswerter Eigenschaften wie geringe Dichte, niedrige Helium-Permeabilitat, hohe Festigkeit und gute chemische Resistenz aus und ist fiir viele Anwendungszwecke interessant. I m letztgenannten Falle entsteht durch riiumliche Gruppierung das regulare Diamant-Gitter nach Abb. 1. Die kubische Einheitszelle enthalt acht Kohlenstoff-Atome und hat eine Gitterkonstante a,, = 3,5667 8 bei einer Bindungslange C -C = 1,54 8. Andererseits ist das Kohlenstoff-Atom in der Lage, 0-und x-Bindungen (spz + p) mit drei seiner niichsten Nachbarn einzugehen. Aus diesem Bindungstyp resultiert das Schichtgitter des Graphits, Abb. 2. 26.Durch Pyrolyse kohlenstoff-haltiger Gase bei rd. 2000 OC und Abscheidung des dabei anfallenden elementaren Kohlenstoffs auf einem glatten Substrat erhiilt man einen Graphit, der einen hohen kristallographischen Orientierungsgrad besitzt und dessen physikalische Eigenschaften zum Teil stark richtungsabhangig sind. Durch thermische und mechanische Nachbehandlung lassen sich aus diesem Material massive Korper herstellen, denen praktisch die Eigenschaften von Graphit-Einkristallen zukommen. Die apparativen Verfahren und die thermodynamischen Voraussetzungen fiir die Kohlenstoff-Abscheidung aus der Gasphase werden beschrieben sowie einige Anwendungsmoglichkeiten fiir pyrolytischen Graphit aufgezeigt.
