Abstract. By exciting thallium atoms with circular polarized light of the thallium resonance line 2768 A an orientation of thallium atoms in the 62D32 level can be generated. Our experimental results show that part of this orientation has been transferred to the 62Dsz thallium level by collisions with inert gas atoms. A series of experiments was carried out using He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe as buffer gases. In all cases the direction of the transferred orientation was found to be inverted.
The cross sections for energy transfer from the 62D3/2 to the 62D5/2 Tl-level indcuced by collisions with inert gas atoms have been determined. The results in units of 10-16 cm2 are: Tl-He 35,1; Tl-Ne 3,7; Tl-Ar 2,3; Tl-Kr 7,5; Tl-Xe 10,8. In two modified experiments the transfer of orientation to the 62D5/2 level could be detected by exciting the 62D3/2 level with circulary polarized light.
Energy transfer between the 62D3/2 and 62D5/2 energy levels of thallium, induced by Tl-H2 and Tl-N2 collisions have been investigated. The following cross sections for energy transfer Q(62D3/2 → 62D5/2) and quenching Q(62D3/2) have been determined:
Tl-H2: Q(62D3/2 → 62D5/2) = 87 · 10-16 cm2; Q(62D5/2) = 43 · 10-16 cm2;
Tl-N2: Q(62D3/2 → 62D5/2) = 71 · 10-16 cm2; Q(62D5/2) = 94 · 10-16 cm2.
