Abstract:The diffusion coefficients of a homologous series of tetraalkyltins (Me4%, Et&, PrdSn, B q S n ) , tetraethylmethane, and carbon tetrachloride in acetrontrile, ethanol, 2-propano1, and I-butanol at 25 "C, and in acetone, methanol, and 1 -octanol at 10 and 25 OC, have been determined using the Taylor dispersion technique and the Gouy interferometer. Deviations from the predictions of Stokes' law as large as a factor of 4 are observed in some cases. Comparison of the diffusion coefficient for tetraalkyltins with ionic mobilities for the tetraalkylammonium ions allows the dielectric friction coefficient of the Zwanzig equation to be determined directly. It is found that the theory overestimates this effect by as much as a factor of 10.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
