Is defined as "elder abuse is a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person". It is important to note that elder abuse in this definition ABSTRACT Background: Elder abuse is a violation of human rights. Elder abuse has disturbing consequences for older persons such as poor quality of life, psychological distress, and loss of property and security. It is also associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Objective of the study was to identify the magnitude and the pattern of elder abuse experienced by the elderly, which made them to join old age home. Methods: The study was a cross sectional study carried out in the old age homes of Davangere district, Karnataka, India for a period of 1 year with the sample of about 105 elderly residing in old age homes. Results: Out of 105 elderly, majority were in the age group of 60-69 (48%). Females (65%) outnumbered the males (35%). Majority of the residents were from rural background (71%). The magnitude of elder abuse in our study was found to be 35.2%. Regarding the type of elder abuse, majority of the residents experienced verbal abuse (70%) followed by physical abuse (13%). Daughter-in-law was involved in majority of the cases of elder abuse i.e., (45.9%), followed by their son (24.3%). Conclusions: The magnitude of elder abuse is on the higher side in our study, which made them to join old age home. This finding, questions the general perception in India whether the families are the safest place for the elderly to live.
Background: The public health experts have coined the name ‘Modern Day Epidemic’ for accidents. Accidents especially domestic are a world-wide public health problem. The relationship between domestic accidents and human health is direct and associated with a chain of socio-economic consequences. The objectives were to study the magnitude and types of domestic accidents in the urban field practice area and to study the healthcare seeking behaviour following domestic accidents.Methods: A community based cross-sectional study was carried out during September 2016 - November 2016 in the urban field practice area of a Medical College in Davangere. A sample size of 2000 was covered by interviewing 366 households. By using pre-designed, pre-tested questionnaire information was collected on basic socio-demographic details, housing conditions, nature and timing of domestic accidents and the health care seeking behaviour.Results: The magnitude of domestic accidents was 5.2%, with falls being the most common domestic accidents (67.2%) occurring during the evening hours. Health seeking behaviour was found to be satisfactory.Conclusions: In our study the domestic accidents were more commonly found in the extreme age groups. Falls were the most frequent type of domestic accidents which occurred during the morning and evening hours, therefore there is a need for adequate lighting during evening hours to prevent dim light as well as proper designing of house to make it elderly and children friendly. The health education should be given regarding necessary safety precautions to reduce the occurrence of domestic accidents.
Background: Health insurance is also called as medical insurance offering coverage that pays for unexpected medical and surgical expenses to the policyholder. A health insurance plan is one of the most secured and safest way to provide financial coverage to the insured family. Objective of this study was to assess utilization, satisfaction, out of pocket expenses and to determine the health seeking behaviour of the insured residents of the rural field practice area of SSIMS and RC, Davanagere.Methods: The study was done in the rural field practice area of the medical college, Davangere from January 2016 to December 2016. A sample of 600 families were studied by systematic random sampling and data was collected from the head of the family using structured questionnaire by house to house interview. Statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS v10, percentages, proportions and Chi-square tests were applied to find the association among the variables.Results: The utilization of health insurance in the present study was 50.2% and satisfaction regarding the health insurance schemes was 93.4%.Conclusions: The study reveals that the out of pocket expenses is high among the uninsured families compared to the insured families. The Insurance policies should be revived to do favour the patients so that more families will be encouraged to enrol and utilize so that the out of pocket expenses will be reduced.
Background: In a health insurance program, people who have the risk of a certain event contribute a small amount (premium) toward a health insurance fund. This fund is then used to treat patients who experience that particular event (e.g., hospitalization). It is a form of risk management which is used primarily to hedge against the risk of a contingent, uncertain loss. Health is wealth. Therefore, the concept of health insurance (HI) has evolved which finances health care. Objectives of the study was to assess subscription of various health insurance schemes and factors influencing them in the rural field practice area of SSIMS and RC, Davanagere.Methods: The cross sectional study was conducted in the rural field practice area of SSIMS and RC, Davangere from May to July 2016. A sample of 600 families were visited by systematic random sampling and data was collected from the head of the family with informed consent using a predesigned, pretested questionnaire by house to house interview. Analysis was done by using SPSS v10 and were results presented as percentages and proportions.Results: The total subscription in the study was 69.3%, Yeshasvini co-operative farmers’ health scheme coverage was 84% followed by others. The factors determining the subscription were the amount of premium, lack of funds, lack of awareness, lack of comprehensive coverage, etc.Conclusions: The premium has to be customized so that all the patients are benefited irrespective of the type of HI.
