Nanoscale refractive index (RI) sensors based on a single nanorod or nanoantenna typically suffer from a low figure of merit (FOM) due to the large full width at half-maximum of the plasmonic dipole resonance. Here, we demonstrate nanosensors with a high FOM and a sensing volume that is much smaller than λ 3 using slot antennas. Two configurations, one based on a bowtie slot antenna (BSA) and one based on a slot antenna pair (SAP), are proposed. The RI information is obtained from the extinction dip that is due to the interference of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which are launched at different nodes of a third-order resonant mode of the BSA or different antennas of the SAP. The high FOM is attributed to the dependence of the extinction spectrum on both the amplitude and the phase of the SPPs. There are important applications for these nanosensors, which can measure the local RI beyond the diffraction limit and can be flexibly integrated.

A three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale optical router is a much-desired component in 3D stacked optical integrated circuits. However, existing 3D routers based on dielectric configurations suffer from large footprints and nanoscale routers based on plasmonic antennas only work in a 2D in-plane scene. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate cross-layered all-optical 3D routers with nanoscale footprints. Optical slot antenna pairs are used to realize the routing of plasmonic signals between different layers for arbitrary direction in a broadband wavelength range. The routers are also integrated with waveguide directly for exploring further applications. Based on these router elements, a 3D network of optical butterfly interconnection is demonstrated for multi-directional all-optical data communication. The proposed configuration paves the way for optical cross-layer routing on the nanoscale and advances the research and applications for 3D plasmonic circuits with high integration density in the future.

The photonic spin Hall effect, wherein left‐ and right‐handed circularly polarized components can be separated during transportation after reflection or refraction by an optical interface through spin–orbit interaction, has gained increasing attention from the scientific and technological fields. Here, broadband subwavelength photonic spin Hall devices (PSHDs) are demonstrated on the basis of L‐shaped optical slot antennas. A basic PSHD comprises two L‐shaped slot antennas with a footprint size of 300 nm × 700 nm. The angle between the two radiation directions of the incident lights with different spins varies from 56° to 31° in the wavelength range of 750 to 850 nm. An array of antenna pairs is used to control radiation directions and improve the performance of the PSHDs. The proposed PSHDs are highly useful in integrated nanophotonic devices given their ultrasmall size, broadband response, and flexible design method.

Optical displacement metrology is important in nanotechnology and used to identify positions and displacements of nanodevices. Although several methods have been proposed, a sensor with ultracompact size, angstrom-scale resolution, and large measurement range is still lacking. We propose an optical displacement sensor with wavelength modulation that can demonstrate subwavelength footprint and angstrom-level resolution with large measurement range in this study. The proposed sensor consists of two optical slot antennas. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are launched at antennas and interfere when a tightly focused broadband light source illuminates the sensor. Spectrum of output SPPs presents a dip, which depends on the position of focal spot of incident light and is used to extract displacement. A maximum resolution of 0.734 nm was obtained. Furthermore, we used interference fringe of two broadband beams as light source and the measurement range of the sensor is not limited by the size of the tightly focused light source while maintaining high resolution. The method utilizes a new mechanism of wavelength modulation to overcome the trade-off between the high resolution and large measurement range, and achieve a variety of potential applications for nanometrology in the future.
