L’histoire de l’aéronautique signale aussi qu’il a été le premier à employer l’électricité dans la direction des ballons. Fervent défenseur de l’aérostation contre le « plus lourd que l’air », il sera de moins en moins lu à mesure que l’aviation se développera au xx e siècle. De 1870 à 1899, il a pourtant compté parmi les personnalités les plus importantes du monde scientifique : d’un tempérament extrêmement sociable, il a développé très tôt un génie médiatique qui lui a permis de devenir un héros de l’aérostation, et d’utiliser cette aura pour favoriser le développement du goût populaire pour les sciences en général. Cet article se propose donc de décrire comment se fabriquent — et, pour certaines, se perdent — les icônes scientifiques sous la Troisième République.
