The aim of the present study is to examine the impact of personal characteristics namely: physical activity, smoking, drinking, and duration of computer use before taking breaks on performance at work of the "Generation Y" who employed in the Malaysian SMEs. The correlation analyses performed in order to gauge the relationship between individual characteristics and the performance of the 67 respondents who were working at the various SMEs. The key finding indicates that smoking found to have the highest effect. Therefore, this study filled the research gap pertaining to the effective management of manpower in the Malaysian SMEs.
Cross-cultural adaptation is a challenging process while sojourning abroad. The inability to understand cultural variation triggers psychological, physical or behavioral difficulties and maladjustment or misunderstanding. Socio-ecocultural underestimation is the root of intercultural resistance, stereotyping, ethnocentrism and racist sentiments among sojourners. Most of the cross-cultural adjustment studies have quantitatively demonstrated factors and predictors of adaptation success. However, the specific forms of cultural variation that impacted sojourning adaptability is blindly explained. Hence, this phenomenological paper autoethnographically observed the socio-ecocultural environment while sojourning in New Zealand. The findings highlighted that cultural awareness and sensitivity assist sojourner’s cross-cultural adaptability due to the socio-ecocultural variation.
Contribution/ OriginalityThis study contributes by giving further support on the use of shortened version of MPQ (MPQ-SV) and revised version of SCAS (SCAS-R). Additionally, the present study also gives additional understanding of the international mobility research by highlighting the importance of multicultural personality, especially social initiative trait on sojourners" cross-cultural adjustment.

Different parts of the world are offering sojourners with a variety of socio-cultural experiences. The inability to understand the variation triggers psychological, physical or behavioural difficulties, and maladjustment or misunderstanding. It is discovered that cross-cultural underestimation is the root of intercultural resistance, stereotyping, ethnocentrism and racism sentiments among sojourners. The online survey was conducted in the present study to comprehend the role of multicultural personality traits on sojourners’ cross-cultural adjustment. With snowball method and a purposive sampling, 55.5% of response rate was obtained among Malaysian sojourners in the New Zealand. Basically, the manifestation of self and other’s affection, behavioural and contextual variations amplify the rationalisation and contradictory nature of cultural variation. Highlighted, social initiative is a sole important multicultural personality trait which perceived as vital to the success of sojourners’ cross-cultural adjustment abroad. The implication of the study is discussed.
The ancient practice of “jadi mali” among the indigenous Iban tribe in Sarawak is a custom and tradition birthed with the aim of attaining a marriage free from any unwanted catastrophe due to violating a taboo. This article suggests the protocols of “jadi mali” ritual as a vital intangible culture passed down from our ancestors’ knowledge to be preserved for future references. It adopts a philosophical approach of Husserlism of Transcendental Phenomenology (TPh) to qualitatively examine the issue of “jadi mali.” The affirmative lessons obtained from this ancient ritual may act as a rule for the younger Iban generation to be mindful of their courtship and to choose the right life partner in the future. The ancient ritual of “jadi mali” indicates a need for mutual respect and teaches intensive empathy about life’s details for genetic sustainability. This article contributes by providing a record for future reference on the ancient ritual of “jadi mali” among the Iban indigenous community in Sarawak. Foremost, this article is important for conserving ancestral knowledge.
Interracial issues are critical to sustain a harmonious interethnic relationship among diversified ethnic population especially in the South East Asian region. Interethnic conflicts, difficulties, anxiety and uncertainties occurred due to people's lack of awareness or insensitivity to the cultural clues of different cultural frame of references (values, norms, beliefs, attitudes and customs), and expectations. Symbolic multicultural environments have significant influences to the people's ways of life. Notably, intercultural awareness was found to be insufficiently measured. Hence, the present study was initiated to establish a feasible measure to assess the cognitive influence of multicultural awareness, guided by the Social Learning Theory. A psychometric contains was assessed and a principle components analysis procedure was undertaken to obtain the reliability of the construct. A key finding from the present study indicated that the scale is valid and reliable in assessing cultural awareness among the multiethnic society in Malaysia. The result signal sufficiency of cultural knowledge assists people to eliminate a psychological discomfort and interracial conflicts.
