O ensino de botânica, geralmente, está relacionado à linguagem diferente da realidade dos alunos e excesso de aulas teóricas, que causam desconforto aos discentes e também aos docentes de Biologia para ministrarem aulas. No entanto, o uso de diferentes metodologias, auxiliadas por materiais didáticos inovadores, podem proporcionar um ensino-aprendizagem da botânica mais dinâmico. Nessa perspectiva, objetivou-se avaliar os principais desafios no ensino-aprendizagem de botânica na visão de um grupo de docentes da educação básica, estudantes da especialização em Ensino de Ciências e Matemática do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia da Paraíba em parceria com a Universidade Aberta do Brasil. A presente pesquisa com abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa teve a participação de 22 professores. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionário semiestruturado com 15 perguntas, disponibilizado na plataforma online Google Forms. A análise qualitativa foi realizada através do método de análise textual discursiva, enquanto a confecção de imagens e tabelas ocorreu por meio do programa Microsoft Excel (2010) e pelo site WordClouds. A estratégia mais usada pelos docentes para o ensino de botânica é a prática com uso de modelos didáticos e seus principais desafios, assim como para seus alunos, estão relacionados à nomenclatura científica que refletiu no desempenho regular dos alunos sobre os conteúdos botânicos. Concluiu-se que, é necessário um resgate pelo prazer de ensinar e aprender, pois os termos complexos da área impossibilitam a compreensão da botânica como área do conhecimento capaz de educar indivíduos de forma consciente e sustentável.
