Previously, a variety of cellulosic type samples has been reported to have ESR signals after some type of exposure to irradiation or reaction with exogenous agents.*-5 As of late, observations of free-radical activity with chitin have been made and the ESR spectra compared to other structurally related compounds. Confirmation of the existence of a paramagnetic species of chitin was obtained via a Faraday balance. The samples studies were chitin, chitosan, and cellulose.
EXPERIMENTAL Sample PreparationSamples were sieved and the particle size used varied between 200 and 225 mesh. After being sieved, all of the samples were extracted in a Soxhlet extractor for an extended time with the following solvents: (1) methanol, (2) water, (3) petroleum ether, and (4) acetone. The samples were then vacuum sealed in ESR quartz tubes.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
