Professor Dr Asunción López-Varela BA, MA (Hons.), PhD (Hons.) teaches at Universidad Complutense Madrid, Spain. Her areas of research of include socio-semiotics, comparative cultural studies and intermediality. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Network for Comparative Literary Studies and the Harvard Institute for World Literature, and coordinates the research program: Studies on Intermediality and Intercultural Mediation. In this chapter, intermediality is explored from an interdisciplinary perspective that uses neuroscience as well as cognitive-semiotic concerns and insights from online digital communication, presenting it as a process where biophysical, technological, and interpersonal factors interact. Shared attention as well as spatial and temporal cueing – eye contact and the sonic modality – are explored from a task-oriented and social interactive dimension. The spatiotemporal impact of the mediating context is highlighted by moving from the role of visual cueing, in a brief reference to Al Davison’s autobiographical graphic novel The spiral cage, to a more detailed analysis of Annie Abrahams’ (2010) online project A fragmented relation, where cueing is dependent not just on spatial frames but also on the temporal dynamics introduced by the aural dimension recorded in an online environment. The paper tangentially touches upon the role of affect in communication.

This report presents the work of LEETHi ( Spanish and European Literatures from Text to Hypertext ), a research group based at Universidad Complutense Madrid, whose projects have focused on the teaching of literature from an intercultural perspective while also helping students to develop competence in information literacy, following the impact of entrepreneurial activities on the academic research system. These projects address the potential role that the Social Sciences and Humanities (Education and Literature, in particular) can play with regard to the imminent development of a European knowledge-based society and its educational, ethical and social implications. Hypertextual models are employed by LEETHi to create new educational spaces that can generate novel learning processes and new forms of production of information and transmission of knowledge, according to European Convergence didactic patterns. The report focuses particularly on the practical outcomes of LEETHi's projects.
