Siden 1970-tallet har myndighetene med ujevne mellomrom forsøkt å trekke flere ressurssterke husholdninger til Tøyen, med den hensikt å skape større befolkningsvariasjon og redusere de sosiale forskjellene mellom Oslos østkant og vestkant. Et av de mest kjente offentlige tiltakene er Områdeløft Tøyen, igangsatt i 2013. Også naeringsaktører synes å ha fått fornyet interesse for Tøyen som investeringssted. I løpet av de siste årene har Tøyens attraktivitet økt, og området har fått en tilstrømning av unge middelklassebeboere. Bostabiliteten til denne gruppen synes imidlertid å vaere lav, og tidligere studier påpeker at den høye flyttehyppigheten på Tøyen fortrinnsvis er et resultat av at mange majoritetsnorske barnefamilier flytter. Gitt de politiske målsetningene og Tøyens urbane karakter ønsker vi å besvare følgende spørsmål: Hvordan oppfattes et heterogent og «endringsutsatt» område som et passende oppvekststed av middelklasseforeldre? Vår studie baserer seg først og fremst på dybdeintervjuer med nåvaerende og tidligere tøyenbeboere, samt fagpersoner som skolefolk og politi. For å fylle ut bildet trekker vi dessuten på vår egen spørreundersøkelse til beboere og utflyttere. Ved å se naermere på hvordan Tøyen vurderes som bo-og oppvekststed, kan dette vaere en inngang til bedre å forstå noen av de underliggende betingelsene som utfordrer den ønskelige bostabiliteten.
