The medicinal plant has been in perpetual use as a traditional medicine in most Asian and African countries. One such plant is Desmostachya bipinnata Linn., a perennial plant of Poaceae family, which has been widely used to treat some infectious diseases. The screening of this plant revealed substantial phytochemicals such as flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides and other constituents, which possess a wide range of biological activities such as antiulcerogenic, anti-helicobacter, anti-inflammatory and other antimicrobial activity. The major compounds found in D. bipinnata are L-limonene, camphene, β-eudesmol, trycin-7-glucoside and trycin. So far, research on this plant demonstrated that, the isolated compounds are safe for human use. However, further activities of the phytochemicals and their medicinal aspects needs to be studied so that more new compounds can be identified, which can be used for the treatment of different bacterial infections. This review is an attempt to comprise all the study of plant phytochemical and antimicrobial properties.
The study was conducted from April to June, 2020 for comparative analysis of socioeconomic factors and profitability between Open Pollinated Improved (OPI) varieties and Hybrid varieties on maize production in Sindhupalchok district of Nepal. A structured questionnaire was administered to 80 randomly selected households i.e. 48 HHs cultivated OPI and 32 HHs cultivated hybrid maize varieties. Descriptive statistics, unpaired t-test, multiple linear regressions and indexing were used for data analysis using statistical tools- SPSS version 25 and MS-Excel. Linear regression model revealed that area under maize (5% level), education (5% level), age of household head (1% level), training (1% level), access to credit (5% level) and choice of seed (1 % level) significantly influenced maize production. In addition, unpaired t-test revealed that the productivity of hybrid maize varieties was significantly higher (1% level) than OPI varieties. Fall Armyworm infestation was found to more severe in OPI varieties (5% level) than hybrid. Furthermore, B: C ratio of hybrid varieties (1.59) indicated hybrid maize to be more profitable than OPI (1% level). However, the total cost of cultivation along with the cost of seed per hectare of OPI was found to be lower than hybrid varieties (1% level) thereby significantly increasing the area under maize production for OPI varieties (1% level). Indexing identified- lack of availability of quality seeds and fertilizers (I= 0.78) as the major problem associated with maize production. Ensuring access to quality seeds and fertilizer at subsidy, mechanization and efficient extension services focused on development of affordable hybrid maize varieties or high yielding OPI and its adoption among the farmers in order to increase maize productivity is recommended.
Bacterial vaginosis is the most common cause of vaginitis. It is caused by depopulation of lactobacilli from the normal vaginal flora and overgrowth of Gardnerella vaginalis and other anaerobic species. Pap smear being a screening and diagnostic tool for malignancy, is equally important to diagnose infective pathology as well. This study tried to establish the significance of reporting the presence of cannon balls in Pap smears and whether their presence suggested bacterial vaginosis or not. This was a cross sectional study conducted at Nepal Medical College, Teaching Hospital (NMCTH), Kathmandu for duration of one year (January 2020 to December 2020). Pap smears were sent from gynaecology department and standard routine Pap stain was done in Pathology Department. Presence of bacterial vaginosis and cannon balls were noted. Total of 799 Pap smears were received. The mean age of bacterial vaginosis was 38.2 ± 9.6 years. The age group of 31-40 years (n=32, 39%) was most commonly affected. Bacterial vaginosis was seen in 81 pap smears out of 799 pap smears. The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was 10.1%. Of the total of 799 cases of Pap smears, cannon balls were seen in 9.1% cases and among the bacterial vaginosis, cannon balls were seen in 48% cases. There was significant association between cannonballs and bacterial vaginosis (p < 0.0001). Thus, the present study re-enforces the fact that Pap smear is also very effective tool to diagnose bacterial vaginosis.
Adverse effects (AE) like vasovagal reactions (presyncope and syncope) have negative impact on old as well as new blood donors. Various methods have been suggested to prevent or attenuate AE in blood donors. This study assessed the effectiveness of prehydration with different fluids or applied muscle tension (AMT) during blood donation in preventing or attenuating AE. Consenting and eligible voluntary blood donors (n=448) were randomly allocated to Control (n=115), prehydration with 500 mL plain water (PW, n=97), prehydration with oral rehydration solution (ORS, n=71), prehydration with 400 mL fruit juice (FJ, n=74), or leg muscle tensing during blood removal (AMT, n=91) groups. Donors’ hemodynamic responses to blood donation were assessed by comparing blood pressures (systolic–SBP and diastolic–DBP) and heart rate (HR) recorded before blood removal to values midway during, and at 0 min, 5 min, 10 min and 15 min after blood removal. Presyncope and syncope were defined by BP and HR changes. Subjective AE were also recorded. Overall, 35 donors (7.8%) suffered AE with highest rates in PW (13.4%) and ORS (11.3%) groups and lowest in Control (3.5%) although group differences were not significant (p>0.05, Chi square). Blood removal was associated with significant falls in SBP and DBP (mean falls by 6.63 and 3.35 mmHg, respectively; p<0.001) but an insignificant rise in HR (mean increase by 0.67 bpm, p>0.05). Hemodynamic responses showed significant differences between groups (p<0.001, repeated measures ANOVA). Therefore, role of the interventions in relation to AE in blood donors could not be established.
