Employees most entangled in organizational changes are the most vulnerable and should be prioritized in workplace interventions during organizational changes.
Following the sudden and unprecedented collapse of Icelandic banks during the recent economic recession, 20 per cent of bank employees were laid off. This nation-wide study compared the health and well-being of university-educated stayers and leavers following the downsizing of the banks and took into account labour market trajectories among the leavers following downsizing and job insecurity among the stayers. Results indicate a clear difference for the stayers and leavers on all outcomes of health and well-being, indicating that stayers fare worse than leavers in the early aftermath of downsizing. Overall, those male and female leavers who had found steady employment and male leavers with temporary employment fared the best of all groups. Of all the groups in this study, insecure stayers are the group of employees that experiences the lowest well-being and worst health.
Frá efnahagshruninu 2008 hefur niðurskurður fjármagns leitt til þess meðal annars að minna svigrúm hefur gefist til að takast á við brýn úrlausnarefni í skólastarfi. Vísbendingar eru um að líðan kennara hafi versnað frá árinu 2008 og því er mikilvaegt að kanna hvort breytingar hafi orðið á einkennum kulnunar frá fyrri rannsóknum meðal grunnskólakennara á árunum 1999 og 2005. Sami spurningalisti og notaður var í fyrri rannsóknum, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-ES) var lagður fyrir 515 grunnskólakennara í Reykjavík. Konur voru 85%, karlar 15% og svarhlutfallið var 38%. Einnig voru lagðir fyrir listar sem meta annars vegar örmögnunarröskun (The Karolinska Emotional Exhaustion Scale -KEDS) og hins vegar starfsaðstaeður ( Job Demands-Resource Scale -JDRS). Í ljós kom að einkenni kulnunar meðal grunnskólakennara hafa aukist frá því fyrir hrun, einkum tilfinningaþrot, en grunnskólakennarar meta starfsárangur enn nokkuð mikinn og finna varla til hlutgervingar gagnvart nemendum. Um 42% grunnskólakennara maeta greiningarviðmiðum fyrir örmögnunarröskun samanborið við 31-38% félagsmanna BHM. Hvað starfsaðstaeður varðar meta grunnskólakennarar álag mikið en telja sig hafa taekifaeri til að vaxa í starfi og fá stuðning frá stofnun, t.d. stjórnendum. Grunnskólakennarar finna til starfsöryggis en þeir hafa ekki mikla möguleika á framgangi í starfi. Álag reyndist hafa sterkust tengsl við kjarnaeinkenni kulnunar, tilfinningaþrot, í líkani Maslach og einnig örmögnunarröskun. Möguleikar til vaxtar í starfi og stuðningur stofnunar virðast hafa verndandi áhrif. Niðurstöður sýna að kulnun hefur aukist og mikilvaegt er að huga að starfsaðstaeðum grunnskólakennara, sérstaklega of miklu álagi. Ástaeður þessa mikla álags geta verið margvíslegar en hugsanlega má rekja þaer til hegðunarvanda í nemendahópi, skorts á viðeigandi úrraeðum í málefnum nemenda sem veita þarf sérstakan stuðning, aukins foreldrasamstarfs og almenns virðingarleysis gagnvart kennarastarfinu í samfélaginu.Efnisorð: Kulnun, grunnskólakennarar, starfsaðstaeður, heilsa og vellíðan, örmögnunarröskun, opinberir sérfraeðingar InngangurUmraeða um kulnun í starfi og veikindi starfsfólks henni tengd hefur verið í brennidepli hérlendis og hefur meðal annars snert kennarastéttina. Á síðustu 18 mánuðum leituðu 208 kennarar til VIRK -starfsendurhaefingarsjóðs og 65% þeirra greindu frá því að starfsþrot/kulnun vaeri ein af ástaeðum fjarveru þeirra frá vinnu (Svandís Nína Jónsdóttir, munnleg heimild, 9. október 2019).
BackgroundWe sought to investigate the extent and quality of occupational health and safety (OHS) education and safety training of Icelandic teenagers.MethodsMixed methods were used to obtain data. Initially, 12 group and 7 individual interviews with a total of 45 teenagers were conducted. Supplemental qualitative data was collected to corroborate the interviews. Following this, a survey was sent to a sample of 2800 13 to 19‐year‐olds, randomly selected from Registers Iceland.ResultsThe response rate was 48.6% (N = 1339). Severe inadequacy in the quality and quantity of both OHS education and safety training was found. In total, 30% received OHS education at school and 14% obtained safety training at work. OHS education was considered unsystematic, and the safety training low engagement. Participants noted that safety training was especially inadequate in jobs in the retail sector and restaurants.ConclusionsOHS education needs to be taught systematically within all levels of the Icelandic school system, and authorities should be more active in educating employers on their responsibilities on health and safety at work.
This study explored how Icelandic bank employees perceived and practiced social support in the wake of the economic crisis when the banks suddenly collapsed in 2008. Drawing on 20 interviews with bank employees, it was found that during stressful situations, employees referred to social support as one of the most important factors in overcoming the changes. The study points toward a complex picture of social support practices during organizational changes and underlines the importance of distinguishing between both nature and source of the social support in practice and in research.
The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of older women’s experiences in the labour market, how they value their job opportunities and perceived attitudes towards them. Qualitative interviews were conducted with seven women aged 57–74 years who all have at least 10 years working experience after they turned 40. Experiencing discrimination in the workforce was often mentioned by the women. Their experience is that men are less discriminated against on grounds of age than women. Older women pride themselves for participating in the workforce for being reliable, unselfish and undemanding rather than being experienced, skillful and good at their jobs. The results indicate that it is important to research further the well-being of older women in the labour market and try to change the negative attitudes and discrimination that appear prevalent. Ageism against older women can affect their well-being and health and must be prevented.
Et velimplementeret arbejdsmiljøledelsessystem kan vaere med til at optimere en virksomheds eller organisations arbejdsmiljø, herunder bidrage til at forebygge arbejdsulykker og arbejdsbetingede lidelser. Arbejdsmiljøledelsessystemet vil desuden fremme løbende forbedringer af arbejdsmiljøet på virksomheden. Arbejdsmiljøudvalget har med projektet ønsket at få en udredning af arbejdsmiljøcertificeringsområdet i de nordiske lande med fokus pa eksisterende arbejdsmiljøcertificeringspraksis, herunder reguleringen på området. Formålet med projektet Arbejdsmiljøcertificering som tilsynsredskab agstrategi har vaeret at undersøge samspillet mellem arbejdsmiljøregulering og-certificering og pege på tiltag, der kan forbedre dette fremtidige samspil i de nordiske lande. Arbejdsmiljøcertificering er et vigtigt element i det forebyggende arbejdsmiljøarbejde, som jaevnligt debatteres. Projektet blev afsluttet i foråret 2010 og er et kritisk bidrag til debatten om arbejdsmiljøledelse og arbejdsmiljøcertificering.
