Purpose. Studying the stress-strain state of the rock mass under the open pit, taking into account the change in the open-pit bottom width in order to reveal the geomechanical state and determine the safe parameters of the rock bridge. Methods. The peculiarities of the stress-strain state formation in the transition zone have been studied according to the methodology using numerical research methods and taking into account the geological strength index (GSI). Using this index, it is possible to take into account rock fracturing, water cut, lithology and other strength indicators, due to which there is a correct transition from the rock sample strength to the mass strength. Findings. Based on the numerical modeling results, it has been determined that an increase in the open-pit bottom width leads to a decrease in the zone of tensile stresses concentration in the arch pillar of the stope block. This, in turn, has a positive effect on the rock bridge stability, that is, the probability of the rock bridge collapse does not increase with an increase in the width of the open-pit bottom. Originality. For the first time, the dependence has been obtained of the horizontal stresses σ3 distribution at the stages of the open-pit bottom expansion at the Akzhal Zinc-Lead Mine. This makes it possible to realistically predict changes in the geomechanical state of the rock bridge depending on the width of the open-pit bottom. Practical implications. When predicting the change in the stress-strain state in the transition zone and determining the rock bridge safe parameters, it is possible to reduce the probability of their destruction and make timely management decisions on safe conditions for mining the reserves.
Assessing the stability of stopes is essential in open stope mine design as unstable hangingwalls and footwalls lead to sloughing, unplanned stope dilution, and safety concerns compromising the profitability of the mine. Over the past few decades, numerous empirical tools have been developed to dimension open stope in connection with its stability, using the stability graph method. However, one of the principal limitations of the stability graph method is to objectively determine the boundary of the stability zones, and gain a clear probabilistic interpretation of the graph. To overcome this issue, this paper aims to explore the feasibility of artificial neural network (ANN) based classifiers for the design of open stopes. A stope stability database was compiled and included the stope dimensions, rock mass properties, and the stope stability conditions. The main parameters included the modified stability number (N’), and the stope stability conditions (stable, unstable, and failed), and hydraulic radius (HR). A feed-forward neural network (FFNN) classifier containing two hidden layers (110 neurons each) was employed to identify the stope stability conditions. Overall, the outcome of the analysis showed good agreement with the field data; most stope surfaces were correctly predicted with an average accuracy of 91%. This shows an improvement over using the existing stability graph method. In addition, for a better interpretation of the results, the associated probability of occurrence of stable, unstable, or caved stope was determined and shown in iso-probability contour charts which were compared with the stability graph. The proposed FFNN-based classifier outperformed the conventional stability graph method in terms of accuracy and better prabablistic interpretation. It is suggested that the classifier could be a reliable tool that can complement the conventional stability graph for the design of open stopes.

Purpose. The research purpose is to study the effectiveness of artificial maintenance of the mined-out space based on the use of cable bolts to reduce the dilution coefficient when mining low-thickness ore bodies. Methods. Geotechnical mapping of the rock mass according to the Q, RMR, RQD and GSI rating classifications is conducted, as well as a linear survey of the fracture system in the hanging wall and footwall rocks is performed using a rock compass and the GEO ID application. Numerical analysis by the limit equilibrium method in the Unwedge software package is applied to determine the safety factor of a mass divided by fractures into wedges. Using a Schmidt test hammer, the uniaxial compressive strength of the mass rocks has been determined. The full-scale studies have been conducted using cable support in the conditions of the Akbakai deposit. Findings. It has been revealed that the footwall rocks are in a stable state, while the safety factor of the hanging wall rocks is 0.98, which requires artificial maintenance using cable bolts. The cable support parameters are calculated taking into account nonuniform distribution of horizontal and vertical stresses in the rock mass. It has been determined that when strengthening the hanging wall with cable bolts in inclined veins with a dip angle of up to 40º, the average ore dilution is 66.1%, and that of previously mined without fastening is 68.7%. In similar experiments in steep-dipping veins with a dip angle of more than 60º, dilution decreases from 62.8 to 48.7%. Originality. It has been revealed that in the conditions of the Akbakai deposit, cable fastening of the hanging wall rocks is effective at an ore deposit dip angle of more than 60º, at which the mined ore dilution coefficient decreases. Practical implications. The research results can be used to increase the stability of hanging wall rocks when mining low-thickness ore bodies with a sublevel caving system.
