This paper describes the spatial and temporal variation of aquatic invertebrate assemblages associated with root masses of Eichhornia crassipes collected at 12 sites between
The Anopsilana oaxaca population at Coyuca Lagoon only inhabits the water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes roots and was sampled monthly from January 1997 to April 1998. Variations in the population structure, sex ratio, and fecundity were studied. The population comprised all stages of the life cycle year round, thus showing continuous reproduction. Juveniles represented 6.1 to 56.4%, and are directly recruited within the population. Females consistently predominated over males, often by a ratio of more than 3 : 1. Gravid females carry 8-85 eggs and 12-77 embryos in the brood pouch. Hurricane "Pauline" hit the study area in October, causing the absence of both E. crassipes and A. oaxaca for three months in the lagoon.
The prevalence, fecundity, and size distribution of the isopod, Elthusa alvaradoensis, parasitizing the inshore lizardfish, Synodus foetens on the continental shelf off central Veracruz, Mexico, were studied. A total sample of 136 fish with a 46.3% prevalence of E. alvaradoensis was obtained during a survey cruise in February, 1996. The isopods were preferentially located on the second and third branchial arches; the lesions ranged from a slight abrasion of the branchial filaments to their complete removal. Mean host size did not vary significantly between the parasitized and unparasitized fractions. Maximum total length for male parasites was 12 mm, while female size ranged from 14.5 to 26.3 mm. Parasite fecundity varied from 100 to 2280 eggs and was unrelated to female size (p < 0.05). Male parasites exhibit a positive allometric growth, while this is negative for females.

Megalopae of the wharf crab, Pachygrapsus gracilis were collected in the two inlets of the Alvarado Lagoon System, i.e., Alvarado Lagoon Inlet (ALI) and Camaronera Lagoon Inlet (CLI). The sampling period included January to October 2005. Collections were taken over a 13 h period with a conical plankton net of 243 µm mesh that filtered during 15 min. every hour. Simultaneously, we recorded water temperature, salinity, current velocity, and flow direction. Megalopa density was standardized as number/1000 m 3 and data were log 10 normalized. Multiple correlations of density vs. water temperature, salinity, and current velocity were tested. The density between the two sampling inlets was compared with analysis of variance (ANOVA). A total of 15,454 megalopae was collected in the two inlets, 1,413 from ALI and 14,044 from CLI. The highest density was in July with 2,788 megalopae/1000 m 3 . The average temperature in ALI was 27.49 ± 3.36 • C, in CLI 27.49 ± 3.84 • C; salinity in ALI was 7.06 ± 4.49 psu, in CLI 14.86 ± 8.96 psu; and current velocity in ALI was 1.22 ± 0.64 m s −1 , in CLI 0.72 ± 0.44 m s −1 . During this study, the existence of recruitment peaks between 19:00 h and 03:00 h was determined. Significant multiple correlations were found (P < 0.05) between the densities of the megalopae and environmental factors. The ANOVA showed significant differences between the densities at the two inlets in September, October, and January, whereas March, June, and July did not show significant differences. This indicates that recruitment is related to a continuous global process, i.e., seasonal and temporal reproductive pulses, as well as to the shape of the inlet.
This study describes the morphology of the megalopa stage of Pachygrapsus gracilis in detail and compares it with that of other species collected in the Camaronera Lagoon inlet of the Alvarado Lagoon system, Veracruz, Mexico. The biological material was collected with a conical net (1.0 m length, 0.75 m width, 243 µm mesh opening). Rearing was conducted in a vertical re-circulating system. We find that the numbers and types of setae to differentiate the megalopa of P. gracilis are on the following structures: antennula, basal and coxal endite of the maxillule, basal endite and scaphognathite of the maxilla, protopodite and epipodite of the first maxilliped, fifth segment of the endopod of the second maxilliped, fourth and fifth segment of the endopod and the epipodite of the third maxilliped, and the number of setae of the pleopods. The P. gracilis megalopa has the largest-sized carapace of all the megalopae of the crab species of the Camaronera lagoon inlet.
