AbstractThe relationship between the risk of poverty and the participation in the labour market has gained major attention in last years. The majority of the research carried out in this field is from a cross-sectional perspective. The dynamic analysis of poverty is particularly interesting for answering several questions: is employment enough to avoid poverty? Is in-work poverty a temporal or a permanent state? In this article in-work poverty dynamics in Spain are analyzed with the objective of determining whether entries into in-work poverty are temporal, whether people fall several times in that situation or, on the contrary, whether in-work poverty can become in a permanent situation which is very difficult to leave. At the same time, the different duration profiles of in-work poverty are analyzed.
With increasing female labour market participation, welfare states in Europe have aimed to reorient their policies to face a newly emerging social risk -difficulties to combine work and family roles. Yet, they differ in the extent of this adaptation, which has been associated with multiple factors including the influence of cultural values or ideas towards care. In this article, we employ the European Social Survey (Round 8) to examine whether and how not only self-interests but also values influence public willingness to pay for extending state's work-family reconciliation policies in Italy, Portugal and Spain, where care provision traditionally was in the family. Although South European welfare states are often considered to be similarly influenced by traditional gender and family values, the findings of this study contribute to the evidence that there are important differences between them.
Key wordsLongitudinal AbstractThis dynamic study of poverty offers results that could not have been attained with a cross-cutting approach. In this article, we examine the causes leading individuals to remain in situations of working poverty. The main objective is to analyze the probability of remaining in poverty from one year to another, attempting to determine if it is individual characteristics or the previous poverty experiences that determine the probability of suffering from working poverty. The results reveal that individuals experiencing working poverty at a certain time have greater probabilities of experiencing it in the future, thereby detecting a dependency of status mechanism. However, there are also certain specifi c characteristics related to working poverty: those associated with the home or with the receipt of low salaries.
