Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the leading vegetables produced by farmers in the Itabaiana region, and thus it is important to study means of sustainable management for the crop. The objective of this work was to evaluate the behavior of lettuce with different sources of organic matter and soil cover. Therefore, it was chosen to cultivate Veronica. The experiment was carried out in the experimental field plot of Project Small Farmer-Great Entrepreneur in the municipality of Itabaiana-SE, in 2010. The design was a randomized block design with four replications, with treatments consisting of five sources of organic matter (organic compost, chicken manure, cattle manure, sheep manure, and castor bean) and a control (no fertilizer), all with and without mulch, totaling 12 treatments. We evaluated the characteristics of plant diameter, plant height, fresh and dry root and shoot matter. We also evaluated the influence on the temperature and soil water tension. All productivity characteristics valuated showed the significant interaction between the type of fertilizer and the mulch, except for root dry weight, where only organic manure was a significant factor. When soil mulch was used, the best source of organic matter for growing lettuce was chicken manure, and in the impossibility of using this cover, we recommend the use of organic compost as a source of organic matter, as it showed the best result in the absence of coverage. The cover age also showed good results in relation to a temperature that promoted lower soil water tensions.
Palavras-chave: recursos hídricos, irrigação, hortaliçasWater quality in a small catchment of Piracicaba River, SP ABSTRACTThe Marins creek watershed is important to the Piracicaba municipal district because it concentrates a large area of horticultural production, which is irrigated with the creek water. With the aim to evaluate the water quality, samples were collected from February to December 2005 at seven points along the creek according to land use. The parameters of quality analyzed were physical and chemical: suspended sediments, pH, electrical conductivity, alkalinity, turbidity, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, sodium, phosphorus, sulfate, chloride, ammonia nitrogen, and nitrate. The analyses were made at the Ecology Laboratory of Forest Studies Institute and Water Laboratory at the Rural Engineering Department, both belonging to the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", Universidade de São Paulo. The results were compared with the Brazilian legislation (Resolution nº 357 of March 17, 2005 of National Concil of Environment) which establishes the Brazilian water classification. The Marins water did not meet the limits established by the Brazilian legislation to irrigate the horticultural production.
ABSTRACT: In Sergipe, lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most produced vegetables in irrigated systems; therefore, it is important to study means that provide the best crop yield. This work aimed to evaluate the influence of different soil cover types and the need
Palavras-chaves: bacia hidrográfica, cultivo de arroz, salinização do solo WATER QUALITY IN JACARÉ STREAM, SERGIPE BRAZIL, USED FOR IRRIGATION ABSTRACTThe water quality used to irrigate rice crop was studied; it is withdraw from Jacaré stream, tributary of São Francisco River at the Sergipe State. Water samples were collected in April, July, August and October of 2011 in six stations along of Jacaré stream and pH, electric conductivity, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, nitrate and total solid suspense were the parameters analyzed. The methodology used to analyze the parameters is according to
