En Cuba los jóvenes son actores fundamentales en las cooperativas agrarias para la sostenibilidad alimentaria en el ámbito local. Sin embargo, en algunas provincias rurales de la isla la implementación de las estrategias para el desarrollo rural alcanza resultados limitados en cuanto a la participación juvenil en el sector cooperativo agrario. En la presente investigación se analiza la participación de los jóvenes en las cooperativas agrarias a partir del caso de estudio del municipio de Cifuentes, en la provincia de Villa Clara: se establecieron tres índices sintéticos para dar cuenta de una baja participación juvenil en ese territorio, con causas que incluyen las tensiones generacionales en el seno de las mismas cooperativas, el surgimiento de nuevas fuentes locales de empleo más atractivas económicamente para los jóvenes, el envejecimiento poblacional y la movilidad hacia otros sectores productivos del país. A partir de estas evidencias, en el artículo se indican algunas estrategias para impulsar la participación juvenil en las cooperativas agrarias y así fomentar un desarrollo rural sostenible.
A partir del año 2008 Cuba ha promovido la entrega de tierras en usufructo y ha incentivado la presencia de jóvenes en las comunidades rurales y en las actividades agropecuarias. La tenencia y la gestión de la tierra constituyen entre los jóvenes agropecuarios fuentes de tensión en la articulación de proyectos personales y sociales, en la construcción de identidades tradicionales —cercanas a lo local— o modernas, y median en la decisión de migrar o permanecer en el territorio. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo caracterizar la participación de los jóvenes rurales asociados a la Cooperativa de Créditos y Servicios (CCS) Jorge Montes perteneciente al municipio Cifuentes, en la provincia de Villa Clara. El análisis se centra en el protagonismo juvenil desde una perspectiva de equidad y justicia social a partir de reconocer sus potencialidades participativas. Villa Clara es una provincia con una marcada tendencia a disminuir su población juvenil resultado de procesos migratorios y de una baja natalidad. La investigación se apoya en la metodología de investigación–acción y aplica la triangulación de técnicas cualitativa (entrevistas a informantes claves, observación participante, y trabajo grupal con jóvenes cooperativistas) y cuantitativas (cuestionarios). Los resultados y las conclusiones ofrecen alternativas desde la participación responsable que permiten conocer intereses y motivaciones de los jóvenes a partir de las actividades que realizan en función de la forma organizativa de la producción agropecuaria a la que pertenecen. Las recomendaciones muestran la necesidad de reconocer la importancia de la participación social de los jóvenes en el sector agropecuario y su responsabilidad social.
