The cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Sniffin`Sticks test for the Portuguese population is described. Over 270 people participated in four experiments. In Experiment 1, 67 participants rated the familiarity of presented odors and seven descriptors of the original test were adapted to a Portuguese context. In Experiment 2, the Portuguese version of Sniffin`Sticks test was administered to 203 healthy participants. Older age, male gender and active smoking status were confirmed as confounding factors. The third experiment showed the validity of the Portuguese version of Sniffin`Sticks test in discriminating healthy controls from patients with olfactory dysfunction. In Experiment 4, the test-retest reliability for both the composite score (r71 = 0.86) and the identification test (r71 = 0.62) was established (p<0.001). Normative data for the Portuguese version of Sniffin`Sticks test is provided, showing good validity and reliability and effectively distinguishing patients from healthy controls with high sensitivity and specificity. The Portuguese version of Sniffin`Sticks test identification test is a clinically suitable screening tool in routine outpatient Portuguese settings.

This large sample provides useful information about the incidence and distribution of oral biopsies over a period of 16 years, allowing valuable comparison with other countries. Non-neoplastic lesions were the types of lesion most commonly reported, with fibroepithelial polyp being most frequent. SCC was the second most common diagnosis.

Usher Syndrome (USH) is a rare disease with hearing loss, retinitis pigmentosa and, sometimes, vestibular dysfunction. A phenotype heterogeneity is reported. Recent evidence indicates that USH is likely to belong to an emerging class of sensory ciliopathies. Olfaction has recently been implicated in ciliopathies, but the scarce literature about olfaction in USH show conflicting results. We aim to evaluate olfactory impairment as a possible clinical manifestation of USH. Prospective clinical study that included 65 patients with USH and 65 normal age-gender-smoking-habits pair matched subjects. A cross culturally validated version of the Sniffin’ Sticks olfaction test was used. Young patients with USH have significantly better olfactory scores than healthy controls. We observe that USH type 1 have a faster ageing olfactory decrease than what happens in healthy subjects, leading to significantly lower olfactory scores in older USH1 patients. Moreover, USH type 1 patients showed significantly higher olfactory scores than USH type 2, what can help distinguishing them. Olfaction represents an attractive tool for USH type classification and pre diagnostic screening due to the low cost and non-invasive nature of the testing. Olfactory dysfunction should be considered among the spectrum of clinical manifestations of Usher syndrome.

RESUMONeste trabalho, estudou-se o comportamento térmico, a evolução das fases cristalinas com a temperatura e as propriedades físico-mecânicas da Lama Vermelha (LV) procedente da indústria de alumínio do Estado do Maranhão. O estudo foi realizado por Análise Termogravimétrica (TG) e Calorimetria Exploratória Diferencial (DSC), Dilatometria Ótica até 1350 ºC; enquanto a evolução das fases cristalinas com a temperatura foi realizada no intervalo entre 750 a 1150 ºC por Difração de Raios-X (DRX). As propriedades físico-mecânicas como Superfície Específica, Granulometria, Limite Plástico (LP), Limite de Liquidez (LL), Índice de Plasticidade (IP), Tensão de Ruptura a Flexão (TRF), Absorção de Água (AA), Retração Linear Após Queima (R L ) e Porosidade Aparente (PA) foram determinadas nas mesmas temperaturas. As seguintes fases cristalinas foram detectadas: hematita, sodalita e anatásio entre 750-850 ºC; e hematita, nefelina e sodalita entre 950-1150 o C. Os ensaios tecnológicos demonstraram que a LV pode ser aplicada para o processamento de materiais cerâmicos estruturais, pois apresenta pouca reatividade entre 870-950 ºC, com elevada AA, e baixas R L e TRF. Entre 950 e 1350 ºC, a LV sofreu uma retração que variou entre 5-50 %, com fusão total a 1350 ºC, devido à presença de fases minerais do tipo feldespatoides em sua composição. Thermal behavior and physical-mechanical properties of red mud ABSTRACTThe present work studied the thermal behavior, the evolution of the crystalline phases with temperature and the ceramic properties of the red mud (bauxite tailing) from an aluminium industry of the Maranhao state. The research was carried out by Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (TG-DTA), Optical Dilatometry up to 1350 ºC, while the evolution of the crystalline phases was performed by X-ray diffraction analysis upon heating between 750 to 1150 ºC. Physical-mechanical properties, like Specific Surface Area, Particle Size Distribution, Plastic Limit (PL), Liquid Limit (LL), Plasticity Index (PI), Flexural Strength, Water Absorption (WA), Linear Shrinkage After Firing (LS) and the Apparent Porosity (AP) were also determined at the same range of temperature. The following major crystalline phases were detected: hematite, sodalite, and anatase at 750 ≤ T ≤ 850 o C; and hematite, nepheline and sodalite at 950 ≤ T ≤ 1150 o C. The technological experiments indicated that red mud can be used for the processing of structural ceramic materials, since it is an inert material between 870-950 ºC and presents highest water absorption and lowest shrinkage and flexural strength. At 950 ≤ T ≤ 1350 ºC, red mud presented a high shrinking of almost 5 to 50 % with total fusion at 1350 ºC, due to the presence of feldspathoids phases in its mineral composition.

INTRODUÇÃOAs cerâmicas porosas podem apresentar certas propriedades, como baixa densidade, baixa condutividade térmica, alta área superficial e alta permeabilidade, associadas a características gerais próprias dos materiais cerâmicos, como alta refratariedade e resistência a ataques químicos. Tais características credenciam o uso desses materiais em aplicações tecnológicas como filtragem em altas temperaturas, suportes para catálise, isolamento térmico, implantes ósseos, entre outras [1].A introdução de poros nos materiais cerâmicos causa, entretanto, a redução da resistência mecânica e dos módulos elásticos [2]. Além disso, a maioria dos processos de fabricação de cerâmicas porosas proporciona corpos com grande quantidade de trincas e macrodefeitos, provocando uma deterioração adicional de suas propriedades mecânicas. Recentemente foi desenvolvido um novo processo para fabricação de cerâmicas porosas, baseado na aeração de uma suspensão cerâmica contendo um agente espumante [3]. A espuma obtida é rapidamente gelificada através da polimerização in situ de monômeros previamente adicionados. Posteriormente, a cerâmica é sinterizada. Este processo proporciona cerâmicas com valores de porosidade que podem ResumoCerâmicas porosas são materiais de grande interesse tecnológico, devido à associação de propriedades únicas como alta refratariedade e inércia química com alta permeabilidade, alta área superficial e baixa condutividade térmica. No entanto, o aumento da porosidade resulta, invariavelmente, na deterioração das propriedades mecânicas. Este trabalho faz uma investigação sobre as propriedades mecânicas de espumas cerâmicas obtidas pela aeração de suspensões associada à polimerização "in situ" de monômeros orgânicos previamente adicionados (processo gelcasting). A macroestrutura resultante deste processo é constituída por poros que tendem a uma geometria esférica, a qual minimiza a concentração de tensões mecânicas. Além disso, as paredes dos poros podem ser completamente densificadas, proporcionando uma microestrutura homogênea. A resistência mecânica de espumas cerâmicas com várias densidades foi avaliada por flexão em quatro pontos e por compressão. Os resultados mecânicos foram analisados através da estatística de Weilbull. O módulo elástico das amostras foi caracterizado pelo método de ressonância mecânica de barras. Os resultados obtidos possibilitam uma melhor compreensão dos fatores que determinam as propriedades mecânicas desta nova classe de material, fornecendo subsídios para futuros desenvolvimentos.
