Among the forage species cultivated in South America, the genus Urochloa is the most used, and the cultivar Marandu of U. brizantha is the most widely planted in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate forage performance in association with Azospirillum brasilense, combined with nitrogen (N) fertilisation. The study was conducted under field conditions in Araguaína, Tocantins, in the central region of Brazil, between March 2016 and March 2017. Four N fertiliser rates (0, 12.5, 25 and 50kg/ha of N per cutting cycle) were combined with two inoculation treatments (inoculated and non-inoculated), with evaluations carried out in three periods of the year (transition, dry and wet seasons). Marandu grass plants inoculated with A. brasilense had greater plant height, number of tillers and forage production than non-inoculated plants, regardless of the N rate. Inoculation with A. brasilense allowed a 20% reduction in N fertilisation. Our results indicate that inoculation with A. brasilense in Marandu grass, as well as increasing forage production, can help to mitigate the stresses caused by the dry season.
Sorghum bicolor.Abstract -The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of two sorghum hybrids for silage production, AG-2005 (double purpose) and VOLUMAX (forage) cultivated with different row spacing 1; 0.75 and 0.50 m, on Orthic Quartzarenic Neosol, resulting in 140,000; 186,666 e 280,000 plants per ha, respectively. A randomized block design with four replicates was used and the treatments consisted on a factorial arrangement 2 x 3. Were determined the total dry matter production (PMST), of leaves (PMLF), of stems (PMSC), and panicles (PMSP) per ha, and their proportion in the whole plant. Significant interaction occurred between sorghum hybrid and row spacing for PMST, PMSLF and PMSP. VOLUMAX showed similar production for the three row spacing. AG-2005 showed higher PMST (9,474.59 vs. 6,842.91 kg ha -1 ) and PMSP (6,355.77 vs. 3,032.40 kg ha -1 ) than VOLUMAX in 0.50 m row spacing. AG-2005 was superior to VOLUMAX for the percentage of panicles in 1 m (57.06 vs. 40.22%) and 0.50 m spacing (66.99 vs. 43.55%), and VOLUMAX was superior for stems percentages in the 1 and 0.50 m spacing. It is recommended the use of hybrid AG-2005 under spacing of 0.50 m for silage production, due to its higher dry matter production per area, higher percentage of panicle and lower percentage of stem in the composition of the plant compared to the hybrid VOLUMAX.
Using biological inputs to improve the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers represents an alternative for the cultivation of grasses in tropical regions. Azospirillum brasilense is a species of plant growth promoting bacteria widely studied and used in inoculants. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of Mombasa grass (Megathyrsus maximus) in association with A. brasilense and nitrogen (N) fertilization. The study was conducted under field conditions in Araguaína-Tocantins State, between December 2017 and May 2018. The treatments were arranged in randomized blocks, in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement, with five doses of N fertilization (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 kg ha -1 ) combined with two inoculation treatments (inoculated and non inoculated), in four replicates. For the number of tillers and root production, the inoculation efficiency varied as a function of the supplied N doses. However, the percentage of leaf N was higher for inoculated plants regardless of the application of nitrogen. In the absence of nitrogen fertilization, it was possible to increase forage production by up to 36 % with inoculation.

Pintoi peanut (Arachis pintoi Krapovickas & Gregory) is a warm‐season perennial legume that has been used in grass–legume mixtures; however, management practices to successfully establish pintoi into warm‐season grass swards have not been fully examined. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate different sward compositions and methods of establishment of pintoi peanut or pintoi peanut–palisadegrass [Urochloa brizantha (A. Rich.) R.D. Webster] mixed swards. The first experiment evaluated pintoi peanut and palisadegrass established as monocultures or in a pintoi peanut–palisadegrass mixture. Pintoi peanut ground cover and density was greater for pintoi peanut than pintoi peanut–palisadegrass mixed swards (29 vs. 8%, and 42 vs. 19 plants m−2 for ground cover and density, respectively). Concomitant seeding of pintoi peanut and palisadegrass showed no negative effect on palisadegrass herbage mass (HM). In the overseeding experiment, treatments were: (i) peanut interseeded into glyphosate‐treated rows subsequently strip tilled into prepared seedbed strips (0.4 m) with intervening untilled areas (2 m); (ii) peanut no‐till seeded into glyphosate‐treated rows (0.4 m) with intervening untilled areas (2 m); and (iii) an undisturbed sward of palisadegrass with no pintoi peanut. Prepared seedbed and no‐till treatments had similar pintoi ground cover (2.9%), density (8.7 plants m−2), spread (11.7 cm), and HM (170 kg ha−1 yr−1). Glyphosate treatment of rows followed by no‐till seeding was an effective strategy to establish pintoi peanut into palisadegrass swards. Pintoi peanut contribution during the early stages after establishment is insufficient to generate sufficient biological N fixation and produce forage for livestock.
