Decomposition dynamics and nutrient release by pigeon pea genotypes under alley croppingAbstract -The objective of this research was to evaluate the aerial biomass, N, P and K contents, and the dynamics of decomposition and mineralization, in six genotypes of pigeon pea, grown as hedgerows in an alley cropping system. Dry biomass production averaged 5.9 Mg ha -1 ; N content ranged from 188.3 to 261.3 kg ha -1 ; P content, from 7.2 to 9.4 kg ha -1 and K content, from 29.3 to 45.5 kg ha -1 . No differences between genotypes were found. Decay curves indicated a rate of 75% of the biomass still remaining 30 days after deposition. Also, approximately 60% of N, and 65% of P and K, of the remaining biomass, were released to soil. No effects of pigeon pea genotypes were found in decomposition or mineralization rates.Index terms: Cajanus cajan, green manuring, biomass, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium.
Using Gower's algorithm on the genetic divergence determination among cherry tomato accessions. The joint analysis of qualitative and quantitative variables has been considered a useful tool to estimate the genetic divergence among accessions of a gene bank. The purpose of this research was: (i) to characterize a collection of cherry tomatoes, using quantitative and qualitative descriptors, and (ii) to use Gower's algorithm to quantify genetic divergence among genotypes, employing a joint descriptors analysis. Forty accessions of organically grown cherry tomato were studied in Seropedica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four qualitative fruit descriptors and nine qualitative descriptors were used. Data were analyzed using Gower's algorithm. There was variability for color, shape and number of locules per fruit. The red color was observed in fruits of 25 accessions. Fruit with different colors such as yellow, orange and brown were also observed. Regarding locule number, the presence of fruit with two, three, four and even with seven locules was detected. The UPGMA method resulted in the highest value for cophenetic correlation (0.80) and seven clusters were formed. The formed clusters made it possible to distinguish fruit classified as cherry tomato from other type grouped in different clusters, because the fruits this category were larger than cherry type considering the equatorial diameter of the fruit.
The effects of branch number and plant densities on organically grown cherry tomato yield and fruit quality were studied. Labor costs for pruning were also assessed. The essay was conducted at the experimental fields of the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 2004 to January 2005. A factorial design was used combining three row spacings (0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 m), two cherry tomato cultivars (hybrid 'Super-Sweet' and a local self pollinated 'Perinha') and three pruning regimes (free growth, one branch per plant and two branches per plant). The row spacing treatment of 0.6 x 1.5 m resulted in lower number of fruits when compared to the 0.4 x 1.5 m treatment, however, producing fruits with higher individual average mass, which resulted in similar final yield. These yields were higher than the 0.8 m treatment. Yield increases due to the higher number of plants per area were mostly due to the increase of fruit number, which compensated for the decrease of fruit size and mass. The 'free growth' treatment yielded similarly to the two branches per plant treatment. The labor costs were lower under 'free growth' due to the absence of pruning. Both cultivars responded similarly to plant population and pruning regimes.
Green manure by intercropping crotalaria with baby corn before kale under organic management PalavrasThe experiment was conducted in Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, with three treatments for green manure, composed of corn, corn intercropped with crotalaria, and crotalaria, in randomized blocks. Baby corn was harvestedduring growth. After cutting the plants, the treatments were combined with two ways of soil preparation: no-tillage and conventional preparation, in a subplot design, with subsequent planting of kale. The evaluations werethe following: production of fresh and dry matter and accumulation of nutrients in the aerial part of green manures; yield, straw weight and number of ears; nutrient accumulation in the ears; length, diameter, and weight of the baby corn ears and number of ears per plant; yields, number of leaves, leaf area, dry matter, yield per harvest, specific area per harvest and accumulation of N in the kale; and balance of N in the system. Corn monoculture provided good
