Le XIXe siècle fut à Rio de Janeiro une période où se développèrent les pratiques des bains de mer sous l’influence de médecins et physiciens français qui en faisaient la propagande à des fins préventives et curatives. Certains vivaient dans ce pays ou y restaient suffisamment longtemps pour y faciliter la diffusion de leur pensée. Ils encourageaient la pratique du bain thérapeutique dans leurs œuvres lues par une large part de la population cultivée. Leur impact fut remarquable sur le développement de la balnéothérapie au Brésil et ce discours hygiéniste eut une singulière force de modification de l’espace urbain. Les différentes étapes de cette évolution sont étudiées grâce à une approche qualitative qui montre les aspects les plus saillants de l’implication médicale française dans le processus de balnéarisation carioca. La mise en place des transferts culturels et l’analyse du rôle de certains médiateurs sont privilégiées pour valoriser les modèles médicaux ayant participé à l’émergence de la culture thermale brésilienne et la circulation atlantique qui consacra les modèles d’urbanisme et d’architecture balnéaires.
Le 22 juillet 1959, le géographe français Pierre Deffontaines entreprend « la montée au Corcovado par Santa Teresa ». Il raconte ainsi son excursion : « Déjeuner là haut. Dessin de tout le panorama. Descente par un petit chemin en pleine forêt vierge de Painera au jardin botanique, bel exploit pour notre âge mûr ! » Une promenade géographique en somme, mais qui se concrétise par la réalisation d'un dessin : la baie de Rio de Janeiro, vue depuis le Corcovado Ces dessins qui recouvrent six plan..
Pierre Deffontaines (1894-1978), durant sa longue carrière d’enseignant-chercheur, travailla auprès des maîtres les plus illustres de sa discipline (Jean Brunhes, Albert Demangeon ou Emmanuel de Martonne) et s’inspira des penseurs de son temps (Henri Bergson, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin). Sa carrière représente un cas d’étude bien particulier en matière de transmission et d’enseignement, puisqu’il appliqua la méthode de son maître Jean Brunhes d’une manière toute personnelle. Mariel Jean-Brunhes Delamarre, la fille de ce dernier, travailla également à perpétuer l’œuvre de son père. Ensemble, ils furent ses disciples les plus zélés, développant de concert géographie humaine et ethnologie. Au centre de ce travail se trouve la question de l’étude des destins individuels (Jean Brunhes, Mariel Jean-Brunhes Delamarre et surtout Pierre Deffontaines), liés au développement d’une discipline scientifique.
