Dans cette étude, l’engagement de l’élève est présenté sous l’angle des gestes professionnels susceptibles de le favoriser. Il est abordé dans le contexte de la séance de découverte de texte de littérature de jeunesse en classe de Cours préparatoire (1 ère primaire). Un première partie précise les enjeux de ce type de séance ainsi que les caractéristiques retenues pour le concept d’engagement et les apports théoriques sur les choix pédagogiques favorables à cet engagement. La seconde partie décrit les analyses effectuées à partir d’un modèle d’observation issu de l’anthropologie sur un corpus de vidéos de séances effectuées dans sept classes différentes dont la qualité d’enseignement a été vérifiée par la recherche Lire-Écrire au CP. La discussion qui en découle permet de présenter des caractéristiques de ces séances en termes de gestes professionnels, notamment pour créer un espace de négociation de sens nécessaire à la médiation culturelle de la lecture en milieu scolaire.
