Abstract. Sustainable development, as an integral part of building an economically rational market, is a challenge which is faced by many branches of the economy. The paper is an attempt to assess the opportunities provided by Industry 4.0 in the process of sustainable development of the furniture industry in Poland, making use of the experiences resulting from the participation of the Author in the project cofunded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union "Curriculum Development of Master's Degree Program in Industrial Engineering for Thailand Sustainable Smart Industry -MSIE4.0".
The paper presents issues related to the assessment of the quality of education at universities. The paper defines and describes quality determinants from the student's point of view in the aspect of academic staff assessment and course organization. The results of students' research after completing the first year of studies and after choosing an engineering thesis in the aspect of identifying the gap between the expected and actual state of the educational service are presented.
Managing a sustainable supply chain is a concept related to many areas of the economy. Its efficient functioning depends on the implementation of SDG activities and the development of industry (first-fourth/fifth industrial revolution). Due to the likelihood of different priorities in the implementation of the sustainable development goals, it is important to build such relationships, e.g. in the supply chain, so that their implementation could take place under similar conditions. Digitization, or the circular economy concept (CE), create an opportunity for the SME sector to build relationships as part of industry networks, for instance, where the managed supply chain would have a common and realistic goal to achieve. This goal will be a priority in business models based on sustainable development. The article presents the results of research regarding the furniture industry in Poland (key industry, referred to as smart specialization). The results of the analysis show that the industry has a large production potential, and the natural resources used in it are constantly increasing. However, there are doubts raised by the lack of stability in the dynamics of the sold production in the industry. Ultimately, the business model of the industry supply chain should focus on the environmental aspect (sustainable management of the raw material supply chain) and on eco-friendly consumption (sustainable management of the product supply chain), so that it can be managed in a sustainable way.
Building the local economy in terms of its structures and relationships is a major challenge for local authorities. Particularly difficult for regional competitiveness are the areas which focuses many companies with the same or a related sector. It is important to manage appropriately with their resources and production capabilities, which can bring benefits both for the region and the entities operating in a specific region. Identification of clusters is the initial action allowing to know the economic strength of its regional dimension. At the economic and political level, the cluster provides support for the government, which is able to capture the sense of the range of need for innovative activities in the region and this in turn, provides a strong incentive allowing to focus on clusters promotion. However, it is necessary to maintain the correct order, because only after the entrepreneurship and regional production systems analysis (e.g. in form of technological innovation) and finding a market imperfections, the government can decide, what actions are more likely to influence the improvement of regional economy. The lower levels of cluster should not be excluded, because the identification of actions based on cooperation is made there. This article presents a practical solution to identify potential cluster initiative for companies in the construction sector in one of the Polish provinces.
Nowadays big data solutions are widely applied in different types of organizations. Such solutions bring multiple advantages in business activity of contemporary enterprises and especially in logistics area. The aim of the paper is to present the notion of big data solutions and advantages resulting from its application in different areas of logistics such as supply chain or inventory optimization. The paper also presents review of selected practical examples and case studies regarding big data application in logistics area.
