The aim of the present study was twofold: 1) to investigate the psychological profile of patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FS) as compared to patients with other chronic pain syndromes (CP) and healthy subjects (HS); 2) to examine the associations between anxiety, depression, worry and angry rumination in FS patients. FS patients (N=30), CP patients (N=30) and HS (N=30) completed measurements of anxiety, depression, worry and angry rumination. FS patients showed higher levels of state and trait anxiety, worry and angry rumination than CP patients and HS, and higher levels of depression than HS. Worry and angry rumination were strongly associated in the FS group. FS patients may use worry and rumination as coping strategies to deal with their negative emotional experience, which might impair their emotional wellbeing. Findings from the present study add to our understanding of the psychological profile of FS patients, and have important implications for developing a tailored CBT protocol for pain management in FS patients.
OBJECTIVES:
Insomnia symptoms are transdiagnostic to physical and mental health disorders. Given the lack of population-based cohorts with objective sleep measures and long-term follow-ups, little is known about the chronicity of childhood insomnia symptoms. We determined the developmental trajectories of insomnia symptoms, their evolution into adult insomnia, and the role of objective sleep duration in the transition to adulthood.
METHODS:
A total of 502 children (median 9 years old, 71.7% response rate) were studied 7.4 years later as adolescents (median 16 years old) and 15 years later as adults (median 24 years old). Insomnia symptoms were ascertained as moderate-to-severe difficulties initiating and/or maintaining sleep via parent- or self reports at all 3 time points, adult insomnia via self-report in young adulthood, and objective short-sleep duration via polysomnography in childhood and adolescence.
RESULTS:
Among children with insomnia symptoms, the most frequent trajectory was persistence (43.3%), followed by remission (26.9% since childhood, 11.2% since adolescence) and a waxing-and-waning pattern (18.6%). Among children with normal sleep, the most frequent trajectory was persistence (48.1%), followed by developing insomnia symptoms (15.2% since adolescence, 20.7% in adulthood) and a waxing-and-waning pattern (16.0%). The odds of insomnia symptoms worsening into adult insomnia (22.0% of children, 20.8% of adolescents) were 2.6-fold and 5.5-fold among short-sleeping children and adolescents, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS:
Early sleep interventions are a health priority because pediatricians should not expect insomnia symptoms to developmentally remit in a high proportion of children. Objective sleep measures may be clinically useful in adolescence, a critical period for the adverse prognosis of the insomnia with short-sleep duration phenotype.
Jatropha curcas L. is cited as one of the best candidates for future oil and biodiesel production. It is widespread in many tropical and subtropical countries but has not yet received much genetic improvement. The objective of this study was to collect Jatropha germplasm and characterize it with molecular markers. A total of 64 genotypes, collected from seven geographic locations on two continents, were analyzed with 32 simple sequence repeat and two candidate gene-specific primers (ISPJ-1 gene and Curcin-P2 gene promoter). In general, markers were found to be highly conserved, and many (40%) were monomorphic in the studied populations. Polymorphic primers, which amplified population-specific fragments, were identified. The polymorphic information content of the polymorphic markers ranged from 0.03 to 0.47. Genetic similarity analysis identified two distinct groups at 0.73 DICE similarity coefficient. Group I included germplasm collected from the islands of Cuba and Cape Verde, and group II consisted of Brazil, Mozambique, and Senegal populations. Island genotypes were found to be very distinct compared to their mainland counterparts. Sequencing of monomorphic fragments identified single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) between these two groups. Highresolution melting analysis of the SNP in the Jcps9 locus further confirmed the two gene pools. Sequencing of polymorphic fragments of the Jc03 locus identified a deletion in a (GT) 4 repeat motif in the genotypes in group II. Several population-specific microsatellites and SNP markers have been recognized. The distinct Jatropha genotypes and the population-specific molecular markers identified in this study will be valuable resources in breeding programs.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
