Sediment cores from seven basins in two regions, the SÖdertÖrn peninsula and central Närke in southern central Sweden, were subject to diatom analysis and radiocarbon dating of the isolation events. In the former area, the compiled shore‐displacement curve covers the time period from the deglaciation to 5700 BP. The latter area is covered from 8200 to 6500 BP. The chronology is based on combined macrofossil and bulk ages with an acknowledged correction. The most elevated sedimentary basin on the SÖdertÖrn peninsula was isolated at the end of the brackish water phase of the Yoldia Sea. During the Ancylus Lake stage of the Baltic, one minor ingression is recorded in the same area. The end of the Ancylus Lake is dated to c. 8200 BP on the SÖdertÖrn peninsula and to c. 8100 BP in central Närke. There was an interval of c. 1000 14C years when brackish water prevailed in central eastern Sweden. Mastogloia is a typical diatom genus for that period. The onset of the brackish‐marine Litorina Sea is dated to c. 7000 BP in central Närke. The amplitude for the early Litorina Sea transgression (L 1) did not exceed 2 m. L 1 is recorded 2–3 m higher in central Närke compared to the SÖdertÖrn peninsula, i.e. the former area has experienced a more intense isostatic uplift since 6500 BP.

The aim with the present case study was to detect environmental changes during the isolation of a lake from the Baltic Sea. Elemental and stable-isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen are presented as well as results of a diatom analysis of a sedimentary sequence from Lake Skären in southeastern Sweden. The dated part of the analysed sequence covers the period c. 8200 to 7000 cal. years BP, i.e., the late Ancylus Lake to early Litorina Sea stages. It is concluded that subtle environmental changes due to uctuations in input of organic material from different sources cannot be detected by diatom analysis alone, but that chemostratigraphy is an important complement to diatom stratigraphy when interpreting the isolation process. We also conclude that, even though d 13 C is highly variable in Baltic Sea sediment, it is most useful in isolation studies for recording the contribution of organic carbon derived from benthic macro-algae and/or terrestrial sources, as a proxy for shore displacement. It is especially valuable in combination with the C/N ratio, which seems to be the most unambiguous parameter. The d 15 N data showed that cyanobacterial blooms in the coastal zone of the early Litorina Sea were probably less pronounced than in the offshore areas of the Baltic Sea. The abrupt increase of Chaetoceros spp. resting spores slightly prior to isolation is interpreted as caused by a eutrophication process during the isolation: it is probably also due to nitrogen de ciency due to denitri cation in the coastal areas.

The Viking Age town of Birka, which existed between AD 750 and 975, on the island of Björkö in the Mälar archipelago of the Baltic Sea, is known as the oldest centre used for large-scale international trading in Sweden. Birka had a strong defence: town rampart, hillfort and a water palisade. Studies of lithology, and microand macroremains in a sedimentary sequence accumulated offshore from Birka, outside the water palisade, revealed a stratigraphically distinct refuse stratum, referred to as the Birka Layer. We argue that the bulk material of the Birka Layer emanates from human activities in the town, e.g., latrine cleanings, cuttings of shore vegetation, cleaning of ditches and storage areas, and domestic animal dung. Organic remains from vegetation and animals, deposited during activities on the ice offshore from the town, e.g., winter markets, may also have contributed to the composition. The material constituting the Birka Layer started to accumulate after the construction of the protecting water palisade. In the Birka Layer and the underlying clay gyttja, there seems to be a succession of five activity phases recorded during the Birka period. After the initial establishment of the town, an expansion took place, followed by a retrogression. The most intense phase with culminating activities is registered prior to abandonment of the site, which approximately coincides with the onset of the extended final isolation process of Lake Mälaren (AD 1000-1300). The sailing routes to Birka from the south and east became too shallow and were finally cut off by the emerging thresholds. After the abandonment of Birka, the town area was utilized for cultivation and cattle-breeding.
