This article is devoted to the linguistic research of journalistic essays devoted to Old Believers published in the newspaper Nizhny Novgorod Diocesan Gazette in 1865-1868. The culture of Old Believers in the middle of the 19th century in the Nizhny Novgorod land was very developed, which is why for several years the newspaper published essays about the history of this movement. The publication formulated its goal as informing and educating the reader, while the target audience of the newspaper was primarily considered to be rural priests. It is interesting that in the pursuit of an objective presentation of historical facts, the newspaper's journalists represent the system of values of dissenters in a peculiar way. The article analyzes the representation of such concepts as "sacrament", "sin" and "crime", and identifies the main value oppositions that express the conflict between the perception of the world by Old Believers and the authors of newspaper essays: "external – internal", "civil – spiritual".
The article considers various ways of expression of a subjective modality in "Works on physics, astronomy and instrument making" (1744-1765) by M.V. Lomonosov. Language of science of the middle 18th century were forming, developing its specifics, in many respects coming under influence of the general tradition of the earlier literary language. In this regard the category of subjective modality is much more expressed than is demanded by modern standard of scientific style of Russian speech. Despite strict natural-science subject of texts which specificity is first of all expressed in rich terminology, emphasized logicality, aspiration to accuracy in statement of calculations, the subjectivity finds itself on the levels of morphology and syntax, lexicon and stylistics. According to the authors, Russian of science of this time is most closely connected with language tradition of the Russian eloquence: it especially appears on the level of syntax and means of art expressiveness. Bright feature of the Lomonosov's scientific texts is also a variety of the expressed and estimated values. Authors come to a conclusion that an important communicative task of the scientific text during that period, besides the message of scientific data, was the direct impact on the reader.
