Digital competence is a pressing need for students in the 21st century. The present study is a systematic review of the literature on university students’ digital abilities. The methodology consisted of selecting documents (n=126) from three different databases (Scopus, Web of Science and ERIC) via peer review. The documents were selected for inclusion following predefined criteria and then analysed using a qualitative analysis software (ATLAS.ti). Digital competence is made up of several elements (information skills, content creation, communication, ethical skills, problem solving, technical skills/use and strategic skills). We identified that the most frequently-used terms in the literature are digital literacy and digital competence. However, the terminology used varies among authors. We also found that most authors do not believe that young people actually have the digital abilities that they are assumed to have. In other words, students do not have a high level of digital competence. Educational institutions therefore need to help them to develop this competence, which is so necessary in the context of 21st century education.
Digital competence is key for students in the 21st century. The present study analyses the extent to which digital competence has been integrated at a Catalan university with 11,362 undergraduate students. To obtain the data, we: (1) analysed the digital competence content in the curricula of 40 bachelor’s degrees; and (2) had the results checked by an 11-expert focus group. We found that the more technical degrees have the most integrated indicators of technological literacy while the other knowledge areas have a higher level of information literacy. Educational institutions therefore need to help students develop this competence which is so necessary for 21st-century students. This study reports interesting results on the presence of digital competence in the curricula of an entire institution and can be useful for improving the institution as a whole and the curricula.
This article deals with the concept of transmedia learning, which has emerged from Jenkins' approaches, with an important echo on cultural approaches, research and education. Transmedia educational experiences cause interest in the scientific community; however, it is difficult to find a univocal understanding of transmedia learning. Therefore, this research aims to address the conceptual background of transmedia educational practices through a systematic literature review. The research process starts with the searching of keywords referring to transmedia learning and without time limitation, with 38 documents yielded in the initial search. After following the PRISMA guidelines, the process ends with 24 documents that have been qualitatively analysed in depth using NVivo 12. Among the main results obtained, it is highlighted that transmedia learning, from a narrative, allows us to concretize the pedagogical principles of constructivism or connectivism in proposals that are motivating for students and in a relatively personalized way that is close to their daily lives. However, its integration into teaching-learning processes is complex due to the large number of factors that must be considered.
