2013 curriculum encourages the senior high teachers to successful develop Higher Order Thinking (HOT) assessment in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, this study is conducted to investigate the preliminary research of developing project-based-speaking assessment to stimulate the students' critical thinking and creativity in English learning. This study uses descriptive qualitative method at SMA N 15 Semarang. The data are gathered through observation, interview, and questionnaire which are aimed to know the existing of the implementation of HOT project assessment. The first results indicated that the English teacher never gave and developed project-based-speaking assessment to stimulate the students' critical thinking and creativity in English learning. The teacher got difficulties in constructing items for HOT speaking assessment and arranging the learning instruments as the needs of the implementation 2013 curriculum. Likewise, the students also never did any speaking project in English learning, and they often got bored during the teaching and learning process. In conclusion, both English teacher and students never did any project-based-speaking assessment in English learning.
An opinion essay is a written text to deliver arguments and present supporting evidence to readers. Therefore, this writing activity applies portfolio assessment since it is a cumulative collection of students’ work from beginning to the end. This study aims at describing the implementation of the portfolio to teach the writing of opinion essays at the non-English department in Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang. The data were collected through observation, tests, and questionnaires. The results showed that the implementation of portfolio assessment could help students write opinion essays by considering its structure and writing components. They were able to state their viewpoint and give supporting data to back up the arguments clearly.
The learning process and life activities during the Covid-19 pandemic proceed through online social media, so there is a need for technological literacy. This activity also happened at the Pondok Pesantren Putri Sahlan Rosyidi Semarang where the academic abilities of the female students, especially the English language, were very diverse but there was still a lack of English-speaking practice programs that were integrated with digital literacy. Initial findings of the daily English-speaking ability of female students had an average of 65 which had to be improved again. Based on this statement, our team focuses on the implementation and training of Digital Literacy through the practice of speaking English for female students at the Pondok Pesantren Putri Sahlan Rosyidi Semarang, consisting 60 female students. The method used is descriptive quantitative by applying brainstorming, group discussion, explanation, speaking practices, digital platform, and evaluation of students' digital understanding of literacy. The results show that the implementation of the practice of speaking English based on digital literacy with an increase in the average speaking English rising to 81. In addition, the female students gave a positive response to the implementation of digital literacy and the practice of speaking that was trained. They were also motivated to practice conversation or monologue by utilizing digital technology.
