Background Gamification is an increasingly common phenomenon in education. It is a technique to facilitate formative assessment and to promote student learning. It has been shown to be more effective than traditional methods. This phenomenological study was conducted to explore the advantages of gamification through the use of the Kahoot! platform for formative assessment in medical education. Methods This study employed a phenomenological design. Five focus groups were conducted with medical students who had participated in several Kahoot! sessions. Results Thirty-six categories and nine sub-themes emerged from the focus group discussions. They were grouped into three themes: attractive learning tool, learning guidance and source of motivation. Conclusions The results suggest that Kahoot! sessions motivate students to study, to determine the subject matter that needs to be studied and to be aware of what they have learned. Thus, the platform is a promising tool for formative assessment in medical education. Aims:To evaluate the self-perceived preparedness of final-year dental undergraduate students in dental public universities in Malaysia. Methods:Final-year dental undergraduate students from six dental public universities in Malaysia were invited to participate in an online study using a validated DentalUndergraduates Preparedness Assessment Scale DU-PAS. Results:In total, about 245 students responded to the online questionnaire yielding a response rate of 83.05%. The age range of the respondents was 23-29 years with a mean age of 24.36 (SD 0.797). The total score obtained by the respondents was ranged from 48 to 100 with a mean score of 79.56 (SD 13.495). Weaknesses were reported in several clinical skills, cognitive and behavioural attributes.
Objectives Community-based education (CBE) has an impact on the types of medical students produced at the end of medical training. However, its impact on professional identity development (PID) has not been clearly understood. This study thus explores the effect of the CBE program on PID. Methods A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted on a group of Universiti Sains Malaysia medical students who had finished the Community and Family Case Study (CFCS) program. Data were gathered through focused group discussions and student reflective journals. Participants were sampled using the maximal variation technique of purposive sampling. Three steps of thematic analysis using the Atlasti software were employed to identify categories, subthemes, and themes. Results Personal, role, social, and research identities were generated that contribute to the PID of medical students through the CFCS program. The results indicate that the CFCS program nurtured personal identity through the development of professional skills, soft skills, and personal values. Pertaining to role identity, this is related to patient care in terms of primary care and interprofessional awareness. Pertaining to social identity, the obvious feature was community awareness related to culture, society, and politics. A positive outcome of the CFCS program was found to be its fostering of research skills, which is related to the use of epidemiology and research methods. Conclusion The findings indicate that the CFCS program promotes PID among medical students. The current data highlight and provide insights into the importance of integrating CBE into medical curricula to prepare future doctors for their entry into the profession.
Purpose Most of the resilience scales were developed for the non-medical population, therefore the purpose of this study was developing and validating a resilience scale for medical professionals – namely Medical Professionals Resilience Scale (MeRS). Methods A questionnaire development and validation study was conducted. The resilience domains and items were identified and generated through a literature review. The content validation was carried out by content experts and the content validity index (CVI) was calculated. The face validation was performed by medical officers and the face validity index (FVI) was calculated. The final MeRS was administered to 167 medical officers, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and reliability analysis were performed to assess MeRS’s factorial structure and internal consistency. Results Four domains with 89 items of medical professionals’ resilience were developed. Following that, the content and face validation was conducted, and a total of 41-items remained for construct validation. EFA extracted four factors, namely growth, control, involvement, and resourceful, with a total of 37 items. The items’ CVI and FVI values were more than 0.80. The final MeRS’s items had factor loading values ranged from 0.41 to 0.76, and the Cronbach’s alpha values of the resilience domains ranged from 0.72 to 0.89. Conclusions MeRS is a promising scale for measuring medical professionals’ resilience as it showed good psychometric properties. This study provided validity evidence in terms of content, response process, and internal structure that supported the validity of MeRS in the measurement of resilience domains among medical professionals.
Educational environment is an important determinant of medical students' behaviour. It impacts their academic performance, motivation, and psychological well-being. Quantitative evidence have shown that there is a decrease in the positive perception of clinical medical students towards the educational environment. The primary focus on this study was to explore the clinical education environment through the lived experience of clinical medical students during medical training. Using hermeneutic phenomenology we aimed to interpret participants' experience of personal clinical learning journey through free text input. Thematic analysis was performed to analyse the written texts. Various measures were taken to enhance the trustworthiness of the findings. A total of 154 (74.8%) fourth year students and 144 (74.6%) final year students participated in the study. We identified six overarching themes of education environment in clinical setting that are personal development, teaching and learning, assessment for learning, facility, support and nurturing curriculum. The overlapping relationship of the themes is illustrated in the Clinical Education Environment Framework. While many themes were consistent with existing framework, our findings also proposed assessment as an important component to influence perception on education environment. The themes in this study finding conform to the definition of education environment which covers physical, social, and psychological aspects of students learning. Medical schools should take active measures to incorporate a nurturing education environment especially in clinical year where students struggle with the hidden curriculum.
Lecturers are expected to teach effectively and evaluating their teaching effectiveness are essential to ensure students get the best learning experience. A systematic evaluation of teaching behaviours with a proper feedback mechanism will help to improve their teaching effectiveness. Improvement of teaching effectiveness will result in better students' learning experience, and thus attaining the intended educational outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate teaching effectiveness among lecturers by assessing their teaching behaviours during lectures. A cross-sectional study was conducted on lecturers in a Malaysian public medical school. Their teaching behaviours were rated by 30 trained pre-clinical medical students using Teacher Behaviour Inventory (TBI) on seven aspects-organisation, speechpacing, clarity, enthusiasm, interaction, rapport, and disclosure. A total of 55 lecturers were rated by the medical students. The organisation and speech-pacing aspects were highly rated as the mean scores were 4.02 and 4.15, respectively. The clarity, enthusiasm, interaction, and rapport aspects attained satisfactory level as the mean scores ranged from 3.10 to 3.59. The disclosure aspect was poorly rated as the mean score was 2.20. Eventhough all lecturers in this school are considered expert in their area, findings from this study suggest that some teaching behaviour need some improvement. Findings from this study also provide useful data for the medical school to chart direction of faculty development activities to improve their lecturers' teaching effectiveness during lectures.
Abstract Many studies have shown that burnout had a detrimental effect on the well-being of medical students. In medical students, the prevalence of burnout increased as the year progressed. The Objective of the study was to determine the predictors for burnout in clinical year medical students. There were 120 clinical year medical students selected for this study using stratified random sampling. Students’ demographics, academic data, Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and USM emotional intelligence Inventory (USMEQ-i) in Google Forms were distributed using WhatsApp application. Data include entry CGPA and whether they made the correct decision to do medicine and ever thought of dropping out. The response was in the form of ‘Yes/No’. Burnout was categorised into significant and non-significant burnout based on the mean CBI score. Each factor was categorized into two categories was analysed using Chi-Square test. Further analysis was done using multiple logistic regression. There were 105 students responded. The percentage of students categorised as having significant burnout was 41.0% (95% CI 31.5; 50.1). Incorrect decision to do medicine, ever thought of dropping out and lower emotional intelligence were significant predictors for burnout with odd ratio of 6.06, 3.06 and 3.24 respectively. As a conclusion, correct decision to do medicine and emotional intelligence were important predictors for burnout in clinical year medical students. They may be considered as important factors to be looked into during student selection interview. Keywords: Burnout, medical students, emotional intelligence
