The complexity of a reading process often becomes an obstacle for students with dyslexia, particularly those studying in bilingual schools. To date, few studies discuss the Indonesian-English bilingual dyslexic student’s reading processes when they encounter reading texts in both languages they are acquiring. This study aimed to investigate the tendency of a dyslexic student’s reading comprehension in reading texts in the Indonesian and English language. This was done by comparing the reading comprehension of a second-grade Indonesian dyslexic participant (age=9) and four control participants. Two sets of reading instruments, written in the Indonesian language. The keywords used in each language were taken from participants’ textbooks. There were two types of sentences in the reading instrument; highly contextual sentences and sentences which is in accordance with participants’ background knowledge. After reading each sentence, they were asked to answer comprehension questions about each keyword. The scoring was based on their answer accuracy. The results were analyzed based on the reading comprehension theories proposed by Kintsch and Rawson (2005). The results showed that the two groups used different strategies to comprehend the text but the dyslexic participant's reading performance was lower than the control participants' performance in both languages. The results suggested that the dyslexic participant’s reliance on his background knowledge and lack of ability in retrieving appropriate keywords were the sources of his poor reading performance. Practices to improve skills in retrieving background knowledge and utilizing working memory span are suggested.
The current study examined the structural and functional types of four-word lexical bundles in two different corpora of applied linguistics scientific articles written by L1 English and L1 Indonesian professional writers. The findings show that L2 writers employed a higher number of bundles than L1 writers, but L2 writers underused some of the most typical lexical bundles in L1 English writing. Structurally, unlike previous studies, this study reports the frequent use of prepositional phrase (PP) - based bundles in the articles of L2 writers. However, besides the high frequency of PP-based bundles, L2 authors also used a high number of verbal phrase-based bundles, suggesting that these L2 writers were still acquiring more native-like bundles. In terms of functional types, L2 writers employed fewer quantification bundles than their counterparts. This study has potential implications for teaching English for academic writing. Teachers need to raise their students’ awareness of the most frequently used lexical bundles in a specific academic discipline and pay attention to the discourse conventions of academic writing, helping L2 students transition from clausal to phrasal styles.

This article examines the sentence patterns in the utterance of the young generation of Surabaya, a city with Javanese ngoko language as a daily communication medium. The Topicality Hierarchy and Language Transitivity theory wereemployed to analyze the pattern of sentences in participant speech because of the absence of Krama usage. The data was a conversation between a man and woman who worked as JawaPos Surabaya employee during lunch. The findings show that male participants tend to emphasize the focus of speech on things that are not human because the focus of speech was more on activities and information. But on the contrary, female participant emphasized more on humans because their speech emphasized the agent or the doer. In addition, more definite sentenceswere found in the speech of female participants than male participants. The study also found that female participant speech was more transitive than male participant speech. The findings also suggests that in comparison to the female participant’s speech, the male participant’s speech shows a stronger influence on the object of the sentence in contrast to the number of agents he used in his speech.
