African Swine Fever (ASF) is a disease that infects pigs. Common symptoms caused by ASF attacks on pigs are bleeding in the feces and ears as well as sudden weakness of livestock, unable to stand, and death of livestock. ASF virus is not zoonotic so it does not affect human health. This virus has entered Indonesian territory, including the Nias Island, where most of the people cultivate local pigs. The ASF outbreak on local pigs in Nias resulted in the death of many pigs. This paper discusses the spread and death of local pigs due to ASF attacks in Nias. Data compiled from the field and the Animal Husbandry Office in 2020 in the Nias islands, it is known that the pigs that died due to the ASF outbreak reached 120,592 a pigs. Meanwhile, the fact found are that the handling of infected pigs cannot be done optimally, because until now, effective treatment and vaccination for the treatment and prevention of ASF infection has not been found. Therefore, in order to prevent the spread of the plague from becoming more widespread, the current methods that can be applied are the application of biosecurity in the cattle sheds, isolation of infected livestock and the role of the government in regulating the entry and exit route for pigs in the Nias region.
THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS COMMERCIAL RATIONS COMBINED WITH DIFFERENT CAGE SYSTEM ON CARCASS QUALITY OF BROILERS. The objective of this research was to determine carcass quality of broilers fed with three forms of commercial ration using 2 different cages. Total of 96 day old chicks were used in this study using four animals in each cage. Research was conducted using a completely randomized design divided into 3x2 patterns of treatment with 4 replications. Three forms of commercial ration (Factor A) consisted of A1 = Pokhpand Ration (CP 11 ); A2 = Cargill Ration (Avibro) and A3 = Sierad Ration (BSG 101). Two different cages (Factor B) consisted of B1 = Battery Cage ; B2 = Litter System. The results showed that three forms of commercial ration combined with two different cage systems give the same effect on carcass quality of broilers in terms of carcass percentage and abdominal fat weight. Litter system and animal slaughter at 6 weeks of age reduced the risk of breast blisters. Keywords: Rations, cage, broiler, carcass quality.
This research was conducted to determine the reproductive performance of sows that are kept intensively at the level of smallholder farming. The research method used was a direct interview with pig farmers in Kalasey Village. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The results showed a birth rate (litter size) of around 12 piglets, 110 days of pregnancy, 21 days of estrous cycles with 42 hours of estrus duration. With these results, it can be concluded that the reproductive performance of sows in the Kalasey Village is relatively good and according to normal standards.
The current research aims to know the level of glucose, cholesterol and albumin of repeatedly breed Madura cattle. This research conducted in Madura Island for taking the blood sample. This research used 10 Madura cattle, the 5 cattle experiencing the repeated breeding and the 5 others are in the fertile condition. The results show that the glucose level of the repeated breeding cattle was higher, which was about (73.28±10.26 mg/dl) compared to the fertile cattle (69.96±20.23 mg/dl). Different from the total cholesterol of the repeated breeding cattle which was lower, it’s about (132.02±26.43 mg/dl) compared to the fertile cattle (135.28±24.83 mg/dl) using t-student analysis. Besides, the albumin level of the repeated breeding Madura cattle is lower, which was about (4.61±0.13 g/dl) compares to the fertile cattle which is about (5.26±0.44 g/dl). Based on the gathered data, there are no significant data but the level of the total cholesterol and the albumin of the blood in Madura cattle that experiencing the repeated breeding were lower than the fertile cattle. The high glucose level of the repeated breeding cattle was higher than the normal level of the common fertile cattle.
