Com o objetivo de compreender o processo de formação de conceitos espontâneos e científicos por crianças cegas a partir das intervenções que ocorrem no espaço da sala de aula, apresentamos neste artigo, uma pesquisa qualitativa, cuja opção metodológica foi um estudo de caso sobre o papel da mediação para a formação de conceitos científicos nessas crianças. Para coletar os dados, utilizamos atividades didáticas, que foram planejadas e aplicadas, separadamente às turmas do segundo e quarto anos do Ensino Fundamental, em uma escola especializada no atendimento de pessoas com deficiência visual. As questões norteadoras desta investigação foram: De que forma a escola colabora para a formação e transformação do pensamento científico da criança com deficiência visual e qual o papel do processo de ensino e aprendizagem no desenvolvimento de conceitos científicos nesses sujeitos? Para responder a essas questões, utilizamos conteúdos ligados à Física, por ser essa uma área que permite à criança refletir, considerando suas ideias espontâneas e originais sobre o funcionamento das coisas. Os temas escolhidos foram: energia, força e movimento. A partir das atividades realizadas pelas duas turmas, comparamos as percepções dos alunos sobre os conceitos em questão. Como principal aporte teórico, utilizamos os estudos de Vigotski e sua teoria histórico-cultural, que tem como um de seus princípios a ideia de que a aprendizagem e consequentemente o desenvolvimento de conceitos não ocorrem por uma assimilação direta e sim através das interações com o meio, com os objetos e com o outro, nas quais o sujeito, através dessas relações, vai construindo seu próprio pensamento.
