Man kan egentligen lära sig ett språk på vilket innehåll som helst, dvs. de ord man lär sig och de texter som behandlas kan handla om nästan vad som helst för att tillgängliggöra språkkunskaper. Den som lär sig ett nytt språk på egen hand utgår troligtvis från det sammanhang där hen befinner sig och för vilket språket används eller är tänkt att användas. När det gäller skolsammanhanget finns en del innehåll föregivet i kursplanerna, men också en mycket stor frihet att välja ämnen och temaområden för språkundervisningen. Därmed är inte sagt att valet av innehåll är oviktigt. Lärandet av ett nytt språk gynnas av att innehållet för kommunikationen är relevant för eleven, att den så att säga lär sig att kommunicera om ett innehåll där den har något att säga, eller ett behov av att uttrycka sig. Att det den säger inte bara sker för lärandets skull utan bottnar i eleven själv.Ulrika Tornberg framhäver i artikeln "Vad menas med 'innehåll' i språkundervisningen?" (Tornberg 2000) att frågan om språkundervisningens innehåll inte är så enkel att besvara:Är det texterna som utgör undervisningens innehåll? Är det grammatiken, orden och fraserna? Är det färdighetsträningen? Eller ska man förstå frågan i ett vidare perspektiv, så att språkundervisningens innehåll består av allt som eleven lär sig om sig själv och sin värld samtidigt som hon eller han lär sig ett språk?
Runt om i Sverige bedrivs det lärarfortbildning om språkutvecklande arbetssätt, som syftar till att stärka elevers kunskapsresultat, ofta med fokus på andraspråkselever och nyanlända elever. Erfarenheter från exempelvis Australien och Nederländerna visar dessutom att språkutvecklande arbetssätt lyfter kunskapsutvecklingen inte bara i dessa elevgrupper utan hos alla elever (Gibbons 2010: 24; Hajer & Meestringa 2014: 15f). Fortbildningsinsatserna syftar till att lärare i olika ämnen ska tillägna sig olika arbetssätt för undervisningen, som hjälper dem att axla det ansvar för elevernas språkutveckling som läggs på dem. Det krävs dock mer än kunskap om språkutvecklande arbetssätt. Kunskaper om språkets beskaffenhet, funktioner och pragmatik är också nödvändiga. Man kan fråga sig i vilken utsträckning det är ämneslärares uppgift att ha kunskap om ovanstående, då det mer hör till språklärares kompetensområden.Svaret på frågan ligger i det faktum att allmänna språkkunskaper inte räcker för att ta till sig undervisning och att visa kunskaper. För att elever ska utveckla kunskaper i ett ämne behöver de mer ämnesspecifika språkkunskaper. Kunskapskravens värdeord utförligt och nyanserat, konkretiseras inte på samma vis i alla ämnen: På vilket sätt utförligt? Var ska eleverna lägga tyngdpunkten i den nyanserade beskrivningen? Och vilka frågor är relevanta att ställa sig när man läser en text i ett visst ämne? Nedanstående korta text kan tjäna som exempel:Lisa och Pelle springer 100 m. Lisa kommer i mål på 14.08 sek. Pelle springer hälften så fort.Adekvata frågor som kan ställas inom matematiken vore: Vilken blir Pelles tid? I vilken hastighet springer Pelle respektive Lisa (m/s)? Inom ämnet idrott och hälsa handlar frågorna troligen snarare om vilken träning Lisa respektive Pelle ägnar sig åt, medan psykologer torde intressera sig för vad som påverkar Lisas respektive Pelles motivation att springa.Vari skillnaderna mellan olika ämnens förhållningssätt till texter kan ligga har undersökts bl.a. av Shanahan & Shanahan, som i artikeln "What Is Disciplinary Literacy and Why Does It Matter?" betonar vikten av att inte undervisa om lästekniker och skrivtekniker på en allmän nivå. Dessa tekniker bör snarare förankras i olika ämnen, eftersom de används på ett unikt sätt inom respektive ämne (2012: 8). Skrivande och läsning som färdigheter och praktiker inom ett ämne, men också förhållningssätt och till ämnet och dess innehåll i olika representationsformer, allt som innefattas i begreppet ämneslitteracitet, kan inte på ett oreflekterat sätt överföras mellan ämnen.
