Um zu dem ohne Formen nicht auskommenden Leben zurückzukehren, müssen die Protagonisten eine Transplantation der Persönlichkeit vollziehen: Elisabet versucht die Identität von Alma zu übernehmen, und Helmut ist bemüht, die Identität von Klaus an sich zu reißen. Die in ihrer Persönlichkeit eingetretenen Veränderungen werden sichtbarer aus der Perspektive von Sigmund Freud, der auf die Dynamik, Kompliziertheit und Sensibilität der menschlichen Psyche hinweist.

Ważną rolę w tekście Manna odgrywa scena, w której bohater, będący zarazem narratorem, udaje się na przedstawienie opery Małgorzata (Margarethe) Charlesa Gounoda (1818-1893), skomponowanej w 1859 roku do libretta Julesa Barbiera i Michela Carré, opartej na pisanej w latach 1797-1806 I części dramatu Faust (Faust) Johanna Wolfganga Goethego (1749-1832)-opery, której pierwotny tytuł brzmi Faust (Faust) por. Kański 2001, S. 150) i do której Mann wraca także w ostatnim rozdziale swojej powieści Czarodziejska góra (Der Zauberberg) (1924), por. Mann 1982, s. 369 i n., 393 i nn.) 1. Jest to epizod mało zauważalny, ponieważ bohater w czasie spektaklu operowego wykazuje zainteresowanie wyłącznie Anną Rainer, młodą kobietą, spotkaną wcześniej na spacerze.
