Starość nie jest atrakcyjną fazą życia, ponieważ niesie za sobą szereg konsekwencji dla państwa i seniorów; jest źródłem troski i walki o nich w życiu, niesie ryzyko wieluchorób, jest źródłem zmagań życiowych oraz zmusza do reorganizacji dotychczasowego życia. Starości towarzyszą liczne kryzysy, do których należy m.in. samotność. Szczególnie odczuwają samotność mieszkańcy domów pomocy społecznej, co wiąże się z silnymi emocjami i stresem. Wynika to z faktu, że te instytucje w społeczeństwie nie zawsze są postrzegane jako ideał spędzenia starości. Warto zastanowić się nadprzyczynami i charakterem tego problemu, aby podjąć odpowiednie działania, aby wyprowadzić seniora z samotności i zapobiec temu zjawisku.
Starość jest nieuniknionym i końcowym okresem ludzkiej egzystencji. Zgodnie z definicją Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia (WHO), osoba starsza to taka, która ukończyła 65 rok życia. W Polsce w 2013 r. żyło 38 495 659 osób, w tym 5 672 608 to ludzie starzy, co stanowi 14,7% ogółu ludności. Według prognoz demograficznych w 2035 r. ich odsetek wzrośnie do ponad 23%, a w 2050 r. będzie wynosił 29% i nadal będzie wykazywał tendencją wzrostową. Będzie też przybywało osób w wieku 80 lat i więcej, w tzw. "okresie późnej starości" 1 . Starzenie się człowieka nie jest chorobą, jednak wiąże się ona ze wzrostem częstotliwości zapadania na wiele chorób. Choroby wieku podeszłego to głównie nowotwory, choroby sercowo -naczyniowe, choroby układu mięśniowo -kostnego, cukrzyca, spadek odporności organizmu, choroby neurologiczne i psychiczne, problemy gastryczne, nietrzymanie moczu, odleżyny. Ponadto na demencję cierpi blisko 50 milionów osób na całym świecie. Badania pokazują, że liczba ta podwoi się w ciągu dwudziestu lat. Nie istnieje lekarstwo na demencję, natomiast da się spowolnić rozwój choroby. Wszystko zależy od skutecznej diagnozy. Seniorzy często doświadczają upadków i złamania kości na tle osteoporozy. Tym chorobom i dolegliwościom często towarzyszy niesprawność i zniedołężnienie 2 .Starzenie się społeczeństw i dokonujący się postęp w medycynie powoduje wzrost kosztów opieki medycznej i świadczeń wsparcia socjalnego, co jest wyzwaniem organizacyjnym dla systemu opieki zdrowotnej 3 . Oblicze starości w Polsce na początku XXI wiekuWstęp "Starzenie się" i "starość" to główne pojęcia gerontologiczne. Są one określeniami współzależnymi. Można je rozpatrywać zarówno w skali jednostkowej, jak i grupowej. Najczęściej w literaturze psychogerontologicznej "starość" określa etap lub stan w życiu człowieka, natomiast "starzenie się" jest procesem, który zdaniem biologów rozpoczyna się już w dzieciństwie 1 . "Starość" jest pojęciem statycznym i odnosi się do okresu życia następującego po wieku dojrzałym, natomiast proces "starzenia się" jest zjawiskiem dynamicznym 2 . ,,Biologowie i lekarze określają starość jako okres życia ustroju po wieku dojrzałym, charakteryzujący się obniżeniem funkcji życiowych i szeregiem zmian w poszczególnych układach oraz narządach" 3 . Według Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia (WHO) okres starości rozpoczyna się w 60. roku życia. W Polsce najczęściej starość utożsamiana jest z uzyskaniem wieku emerytalnego, który wynosi -według Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego (GUS) -dla kobiet 60 lat, a dla mężczyzn -65.W ostatnich latach tempo starzenia się gwałtownie rośnie. Szczególnie intensywne występuje w krajach Europy i Ameryki Północnej. Szacuje się, że w 2030 r. około 12% wszystkich Europejczyków osiągnie wiek 75 lat i więcej, a 7% przekroczy wiek 80 lat. Bezpieczeństwo społeczne (social security) jest postrzegane jako naczelna wartość człowieka, grupy społecznej oraz społeczności międzynarodowej. To ochrona egzystencjalnych podstaw życia ludzi, zapewnienie możliwości zaspokajania indywidualnych potrzeb (materialnych i duchowych) realizacja aspiracji życiowych poprzez tworzenie warunków do pracy i nauki, ochronę zdrowia oraz gwarancje emerytalne. Definicja Ilo z 1984 określa, że social security jest ochroną członków społeczeństwa w przypadku redukcji zarobków, choroby, macierzyństwa, dyskryminacji w sektorze zatrudnienia, bezrobocia, niepełnosprawności, starości i śmierci, dostarczającą opiekę zdrowotną i ochronę rodzin z dziećmi" 1 .W realiach XXI wieku człowiek stanął przed wyzwaniem tworzenia bezpieczeństwa we wszystkich jego wymiarach i płaszczyznach, począwszy od bezpieczeństwa personalnego i lokalnego, po narodowe i międzynarodowe, a także społeczne, ekologiczne, powszechne, ekonomiczne, publiczne i militarne. Szeroki wachlarz potrzeb w zakresie bezpieczeństwa oraz towarzyszących mu wszechogarniających zagrożeń sprawia, że odczuwamy szczególną potrzebę włączania i wykorzystania w działaniach na rzecz tworzenia bezpieczeństwa wszystkich pomiotów, jakimi dysponują współczesne państwa i społeczeństwa.
