ABSTRACT. The authors discuss the possible causes of serial price increases since 1978 from a Chilean perspective. The most important causes are inflation and the increase in the number of pages per serial. Roughly, the average annual increase in serial prices has been 11% in nominal terms, 5% in real terns, and 2% when one adjusts for the increase in the number of pages per serial. The growth of mail, production and paper costs and exchange rate variations do not seem to cause the 2% increase in the real price per page for serials.
